OFFER DESCRIPTION

The researcher will take part in the various meetings between the 4 partner laboratories and in the field (archaeological sites and reserves, museums, etc.) in order to select the objects to be studied.
He will carry out the multi-scale physico-chemical study of the corroded objects by combining the analytical methods of the two French partners (optical and electronic microscopies, micro XRD, micro Raman) to describe the corrosion system.
It will propose corrosion mechanisms for the studied systems.
He will be in close contact with teams of conservator-restorers who will study the same object with their own methodology.
It will populate the database with the newly created records and test the effectiveness of the expert system, in conjunction with the Swiss developers.

The INTERREG METALPAT program aims to develop and set up an expert system to diagnose the state of corrosion of heritage metals. This expert system is accessible via an application, MiCorr, allowing easy access for users (restorers, conservators, archaeologists, corrosionists, etc.) to a database describing corrosion systems observed at different scales. With the examination tools available to him (visual observation and binocular magnifying glass in most cases), the user can then access comparable systems that will have been analysed in cross-section with materials science methods, and, in fine, has probable corrosion mechanisms. This comparison will enable him to make a more reliable diagnosis of his object of study, which cannot be subject to invasive studies, in view of its heritage value.
To date, the MiCorr database has only 50 records. In order for the expert system to be operational it is necessary to significantly increase the number of corrosion systems described and analysed using multi-scale techniques.
The aim of the research CDD will be to carry out a physico-chemical study and to propose corrosion mechanisms for a large number of archaeological and heritage objects. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with the heritage professionals involved in the project, who will carry out, on the same objects, a stratigraphic description specific to the restoration-conservation field.

This project brings together four partners, two of which are at the Haute Ecole Arc
(Neuchatel-Switzerland) for the conservation approach and digital development of the expert system and two French partners: the CNRS and UTBM's LMC-IRAMAT metallurgy and culture laboratory (based in Belfort) and the CEA/CNRS's LAPA-NIMBE (based at CEA Saclay), where its state-of-the-art analysis platform is located.
The CDD researcher will be based at the LMC laboratory in Belfort but will have to carry out frequent missions on the LMC analytical platform located at CEA Saclay in Ile de France. He/she will also take part in the regular meetings of the partners in France and Switzerland. High mobility is required.

Concept of conservation/restoration of heritage objects desired
Knowledge of or interest in metallography would be appreciated.
