OFFER DESCRIPTION

Applications are invited for one of 15 PhD positions as Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) funded by the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “NextMGT – Next Generation of Micro Gas Turbines for High Efficiency, Low Emissions and Fuel Flexibility” within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission.

NextMGT is a consortium of high-profile universities, research institutions and companies across Europe. The consortium will host the ESRs for the duration of their PhD study – with EU funding available for each ESR for 3 years. The hosting institutions are:

Benefits

The successful candidates will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for Early Stage Researchers. The exact (net) salary will be confirmed upon appointment and is dependent on local tax regulations and on the country correction factor (to allow for the difference in cost of living in different EU Member States). The salary includes a living allowance, a mobility allowance and a family allowance (if married). The guaranteed PhD funding is for 36 months (i.e. EC funding, additional funding is possible, depending on the availability of other funding sources at the local institution employing the ESR). In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

ESRs will be enrolled for a PhD degree in their host institutions or at a partner university. They need to follow the training programme provided in NextMGT project. In addition to their research and PhD programme, the ESR are required to work closely with the project team to ensure project deliverables and milestones are met in a timely manner; assist in the dissemination and outreach activities by providing suitable material to the project website; as well as play a role in raising the national and international profile of their research teams by publishing articles in international journals and attendance at conferences and workshops.

Eligibility criteria

Early-stage researchers are those who are, at the time of recruitment by the host institution, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained their last degree, which formally qualifies them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged.

Conditions of international mobility of researchers: Researchers are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. At the time of selection by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host organisation that they are applying to for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not considered a barrier.

English language: the Early Stage Researchers must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training. Further specific requirements may apply to particular universities in the consortium.

Based on the recruitment criteria a short list will be produced for each position and a number of candidates will be interviewed by some members of the Supervisory Board via an online platform such as Skype or similar. Each candidate will give a presentation. After a thorough evaluation, the candidates are ranked and a collective decision will be made.

Any individual can apply for a maximum of three positions within NextMGT project.

Additional comments

The recruitment strategy will adhere to the European Charter for Researchers (ECR) and the Code for Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (CCRR), for ensuring that the ESRs will be subject to the same rights and obligations. The ECR and CCRR set the general framework of principles and requirements for ESRs and employers aiming at a productive and of mutual benefit relationship. The latter aims at enhancing scientific and technological knowledge generation, sharing, and wider dissemination, for maximising the ESRs personal career development. Researchers are employed on fixed-term contracts and are registered as staff members during their PhD degrees. Therefore, they are entitled to pension contributions, paid holidays, and other benefits as governed by the hosting institution.

Masters (or equivalent) degree in Mechanical Engineering or Physics

 

ESR4:

Master (or equivalent) degree in Mechanical, Energy, Thermal Power, Electrical or Industrial Engineering

 

ESR5:

Masters (or equivalent) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Thermal Engineering

 

ESR6:

Masters (or equivalent) degree in Mechanical Engineering, or similar with turbomachinery and power plant modelling and analysis background including data driven modelling

 

ESR7:

Masters (or equivalent) degree in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering or Physics/Chemistry
