The Faculty of Design Sciences is seeking to fill a full-time vacancy for a  

Doctoral assistant in the area of conservation-restoration

Job description

  • You contribute to teaching and research in the field of conservation-restoration.
  • You will be assigned following lecturing duties: technical history in function of cultural heritage (Ba2), implementation III.A. and III.B. (Ba3, former program) and/or other course units in coordination with the educational team conservation-restoration and heritage studies. You will support students in their bachelor and master thesis.     
  • You will compete to obtain externally funded research grants.
  • Your research focuses on the technical history of material culture, with a particular focus on visual and decorative art. You will study techniques and (historical) recipes and their implementation, their context and methods of transmission, etc. Your research forms an interdisciplinary connection between humanities, natural sciences and technology history in function of heritage care and conservation-restoration.
  • You will publish the results of your research in international peer reviewed journals.
  • The heritage courses of the University of Antwerp are in full development. You will represent the study programs during research and teaching moments (fairs, conferences, etc.) and you will reflect on the position of these study programs in the future.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold (or get during the application period) a doctorate degree (PhD) in conservation-restoration, heritage studies or equivalent.
  • You have experience with conservation-restoration in practice.
  • You have a demonstrable interest in the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary developments within heritage studies.
  • The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

We offer

  • an appointment as a doctoral assistant for a period of three years, with a possibility of renewal for a further three-year period after positive evaluation;
  • the date of appointment will be 15 September 2020;
  • a full time gross monthly salary ranging from € 4.134,93 to € 6.446,00;
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.

  • Your application must be accompanied by a cover letter of maximum two pages in which you write down your vision of a contemporary conservation-restoration and heritage study program and a research plan according to the template project outline in the format of a junior project application that can be a basis for the effective submission of such a project in 2021.
  • A pre-selection will be made from amongst the submitted applications. The remainder of the selection procedure is specific to the position and will be determined by the selection panel.
