OFFER DESCRIPTION

Politecnico di Milano is seeking a PhD candidate for a MSCA - Marie Skłodowska-Curie position in “Optimization of dynamic cable configuration for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) and floating windfarms” within STEP4WIND - Novel deSign, producTion and opEration aPproaches for floating WIND turbine farms, a European Industrial Doctorate programme granted under the H2020 MSCA Innovative Training Network initiative.

The main objective of STEP4WIND is to address both technological and economical challenges related to the development of large floating offshore wind farms. Floating wind turbines (FOWTs) could be a game-changer to further decrease the cost of offshore wind energy and unlock new markets. Wind turbines placed on a floating support and moored to the seabed can harness energy in areas with much higher wind speeds, at a reduced installation cost. It also gives the opportunity to countries with deep water to enter the offshore wind industry.

The project runs over 4 years and will deliver 10 PhD degrees, in joint supervision and training between the public and private sectors. The early-stage researchers (ESRs) will be part of a network supervised by 3 universities with a track-record in wind energy research and 5 companies leading the deployment of floating wind farms and heavily involved in policy-making bodies. A training programme and a mentoring scheme will equip the ESRs with key skills for their future career. Scientifically, STEP4WIND will develop floating-specific tools, methods and infrastructures to tackle the technological and economical challenges of FOWTs, from design to deployment, operation and scaling up. It will also deliver guidelines for large farm deployments, with a clear roadmap to commercialization.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Politecnico di Milano – Italy, within the research line of Dynamics and Control of Mechanical Systems. S/he will spend the first 18 months of the research activity at PoliMi; the remaining 18 months will be spent at Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult in Blyth - UK. Politecnico di Milano will be responsible for awarding the PhD degree upon successful completion of the research programme.

Abstract of the research project

Dynamic cables are already used in the oil and gas industry. However, the numerical models used to study them require modifications to account for the specific characteristics of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) structures. In particular, subsea power cables on FOWT farms experience greater levels of mechanical stress due to the dynamic environment, leading to an increase in cable failures. This project will go beyond the state-of-the-art by optimizing the cable configuration, whilst accounting for cable fatigue, and using unique testing facilities for model validation.

In Year 1, a numerical model will be implemented integrating FOWT and cable models, including both static and dynamic response. The model will be able to reproduce the fatigue in floating wind cables for different cable systems and configurations.

In Year 2, the developed model will be used to identify the criteria that lead to the optimum cables solution in order to reduce cable fatigue and maximize FOWT performances.

In Year 3, the numerical solution will be validated through experimental tests in a representative simulated environment. The dynamic cable test rig at ORE Catapult, which allows dynamic cable technologies to be submerged in sea water whilst simultaneously undergoing electrical and mechanical fatigue testing, will be used to validation data for the modelling activities.

The principal outputs of this doctoral research are described as follows:

1) Numerical model for a FOWT with its cable system

2) An optimization procedure to design the cables systems solution for FOWTs

3) An experimental database for numerical model validation

The selected candidate will be appointed a temporary contract for 36 months, to be renewed annually; the salary will be in line with the funding schemes of MSC actions: for the first 18 months it will be in accordance with Italian rules and regulations within this regard, and Country specific requirements, as stated in the Grant Agreement and Guide for applicants.

Monthly salary in Italy will be of 3.413,88 € + 600 € (living allowance + mobility allowance, gross amount), allocated following Italian specific contract conditions for MSCA candidates.

Family allowance (500 € month – gross amount) will be granted upon specific conditions.

For the second 18 months, the salary will be in line with the funding schemes of MSC actions and will be in accordance with UK rules and regulations, and Country specific requirements as stated in the Grant Agreement and Guide for Applicants.

Monthly salary (living allowance + mobility allowance) will be 5.171€ (gross amount) or its equivalent in Pounds Sterling, allocated following UK specific contract conditions for MSCA candidates. Family allowance (500 €/month – gross amount) will be granted upon specific conditions.

During the 3 years of employment, for first 18 months the workplace will be Politecnico di Milano, Department of Mechanical Engineering, located in Bovisa Campus in Milano - Italy. For the remaining 18 months the workplace will be ORE Catapult in Blyth - UK.

Eligibility criteria

The successful candidate is required to have:

  • Documented background in dynamics of mechanical systems
  • Documented background in fluid structure interaction
  • A background in hydrodynamics is preferred
  • Background in data analysis and programming
  • Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English

In addition, the successful candidate should satisfy at the time of the recruitment the following mandatory characteristics:

  • less than 4 years of equivalent research experience (i.e. working as researcher after obtaining your master’s degree)
  • not been awarded a PhD
  • have not resided or carried out her/his main activity in Italy for more than 12 months in the last 3 years

The enrolment is subject to academic approval and fulfillment of the requirements for admission to a doctoral program at POLIMI.
