OFFER DESCRIPTION

The Idiap Research Institute is currently seeking candidates for one PhD position in the area of automatic speech recognition. The position is funded by a new EU Horizon 2020 project, a research project on long term unsupervised adaptation of the acoustic and the language models of a speech recognition system. The research will be carried out together with a European consortium of high-profile research institutes and companies. The technical development will be centered around the project platform, which will allow to automatically record and annotate the voice recordings.

Description of work:
Goal of the project is to research new algorithms for Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), to be later exploited as an integral part of automation in the Air Traffic Management (ATM) world, where the communication relies on an intensive use of spoken language. Data link will be another media of communication with its known advantages compared to voice communication but for the future it is still assumed that data link communication will increase but never fully replace voice communication. The ASR solution will be built using state-of-the-art machine learning platforms such as Kaldi, Pytorch, etc.

Application:
The applicants should hold a master degree in computer science or a related field, and should have very good programming skills. Past experience of research, along with knowledge of speech and audio processing, or language modeling or understanding, or information retrieval, etc., would be valuable assets. The candidates should also demonstrate good communication and writing skills in English.

The PhD will be affiliated with a well-respected speech group at Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) , Brno University of Technology (BUT), Czech Republic: speech.fit.vutbr.cz
While working at Idiap, Martigny, Switzerland, the successful candidate will become a doctoral student at FIT BUT, and thus also has to be accepted for enrolment: https://www.fit.vut.cz/applicants/degree-programme-en/#dr The PhD position is for 4 years, provided successful progress, and should lead to a dissertation. Annual gross salary ranges from 47,000 CHF (first year) to 50,000 CHF (last year).
