Applications are invited for a full-time Early Stage Researcher/PhD student position in the Systems Neuroscience Group, https://www.clinicbarcelona.org/idibaps/areas-de-investigacion/neurociencias-clinicas-y-experimentales/neurociencia-de-sistemas, led by Dr. Maria V. Sanchez-Vives, at Institute of Biomedical Research August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS, Barcelona) and the Biomedicine PhD program of University of Barcelona (UB). The position is part of European School of Network Neuroscience (euSNN, GA: 860563) project, https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/860563. euSNN will integrate leading European groups in network neuroscience and deliver training on knowledge and skills that enable students to pursue a successful career in this emerging field.


The Institut D'Investigacions Biomediques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) (http://www.idibaps.org/en_index.html ) is a public research centre dedicated to translational research in the field of biomedicine. It aims to integrate state of the art basic research and quality clinical research to improve prevention and treatment of the main health problems present in our society. Founded in 1996, the IDIBAPS consortium is formed by the Government of Catalonia, the University of Barcelona's Faculty of Medicine (UB), the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (HCB) and the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques de Barcelona of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (IIBB-CSIC). HCB and IDIBAPS are linked third parties (article 14) and therefore the tasks of IDIBAPS will be also assimilated by HCB.

IDIBAPS is currently involved in 12 MSCA projects in H2020 (5 Individual Fellowships, 1 RISE, 1 COFUND and 5 ITN). The IDIBAPS´ fellows within this ITN proposal will be enrolled into one of the PhD programmes offered by the University of Barcelona (e.g. Faculty of Medicine). Moreover, the fellows (pre- and post-docs hosted at IDIBAPS) have access to our IDIBAPS in-house training program in non scientific skills with monthly sessions given by experts. It includes 12 topics such as oral communication skills, grant writing, research integrity and tech transfer, among others. Since April 2015, the European Commission awarded the logo "HR Excellence in Research" to IDIBAPS as provider and supporter of a stimulating and favorable working environment according to its HRS4R. IDIBAPS is currently implementing its updated action plan 2017-2020 trying to improve its human resources practices (http://www.idibaps.org/research-career/en_hrs4r.html ).

euSNN project

euSNN will combine and train all approaches relevant for investigation of brain networks, including imaging and electrophysiology, analysis, modelling, network modulation with optogenetics or non-invasive neurostimulation and studies on network changes in neurological disorders. euSNN is funded by the European Union's Horizon2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska Curie (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2019) grant agreement No 860563.

Candidates are applying to the ESR 12 project: Impact of DC electric fields on cortical network dynamics. We expect to obtain detailed information of how physiological cortical activity is influenced by exogenous electric fields and to generate information that it is of value both for basic cortical physiology and also for medical applications.

The training is in: neuroscience, neurocomputational modeling, data analysis. Secondments are foreseen for: oscillations and brain stimulation; dynamics of cortical networks; graph-theoretical analysis of neurophysiological data; market-oriented strategies for exploitation of neurostimulation approaches.

Candidates with a background in neuroscience, physics, engineering, biology and computer science are encouraged to apply.


Starting date for the ESR: 1st July 2020 (the latest). Duration of the research employment: 36 months.

The per annum Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher living and mobility allowance (plus family allowance if applicable) is in line with Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network requirements. This amount will be subject to personal income taxes and Social Security costs, and will be paid in euro.

Eligibility criteria

The following eligibility criteria apply: ESRs must, at the date of recruitment by the beneficiary, be in the first four years* (full-time equivalent [FTE] research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Researchers who have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account. International European interest organisations or international organisations cannot recruit researchers who have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date at the same appointing organisation.

Selection process

Presentation of applications:

Host institutions will perform a first eligibility check and shortlist candidates at a Board Meeting. Interviews will take place via Teleconference with Principal Investigator. Successful candidates will be informed by end of April 2020.
