The Laboratoire d’Information Quantique at Université libre de Bruxelles, Brussels, Belgium, invites applications for 2 fully funded PhD positions in the area of neuromorphic information processing. Targeted implementation platform is photonics. Candidates should have a master degree in physics or engineering, with a strong interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence and/or photonics and experimental physics.
This position is a part of the H2020 Marie-Curie Innovative Training Network project (POST-DIGITAL) that received funding from the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 860360.
The POST-DIGITAL project:
The future economic growth in Europe requires engineers and researchers capable to design, develop and implement new information technologies to support explosive data-driven transformation of economy, public and government activities. Current information, computing and processing technologies strongly rely on the classical digital approaches and architectures developed by von Neumann. It is well understood nowadays that brain- or nature-inspired (neuromorphic) technologies can offer substantial advantage in terms of processing capabilities and power efficiency. The development of analog hardware platforms will allow us to achieve significantly higher bandwidth efficiency, faster processing and higher adaptability through integration of self-learning systems. European Training Network on Post-Digital Computing - POSTDIGITAL is an interdisciplinary training network comprising internationally leading teams from academia, research centres and industry, including IBM, Thales and three highly reputed SMEs. POST-DIGITAL will provide a unique training opportunity to a cohort of 15 early stage researchers (ESRs) in the inter-disciplinary fields of emerging disruptive neuromorphic computational technologies and their applications. The strong industrial presence in the network will bridge the gap between early stage innovation and utilization, providing ESRs with the experience of practical applications and solutions beyond traditional digital methods. POST-DIGITAL has the ambition and the vision to create a new generation of scientific and industrial leaders that will greatly contribute to strengthening Europe’s human resources and industry competitiveness in future digital and post digital economy.
You will develop neuromorphic information processing systems. The targeted implementation plateform is photonics. Both numerical and experimental projects are possible. Numerical projects aim to improve the performance of the technological plateforms, based on the latest advances in artificial intelligence, and how the brain processes information. Experimental projects will be implemented using fiber optics, or possibly integrated optics (to be defined at the beginning of the project, according to the expertise of the ESR), and will aim to carry out photonic information processing using the frequency degree of freedom of light.
How you will work:
You will be part of a stimulating and dynamic network of European top-level universities and other institutions. You will be based at Universite libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, in the group of Serge Massar (Laboratoire d'Information Quantique).
On a regular basis, you will conduct research visits and secondments at several of the POST DIGITAL partner institutions (both academic and industrial), according to your individual research project. You will participate, throughout your PhD, in POST DIGITAL research activities and actively collaborate within the consortium. You will actively participate in the training program offered by the POST DIGITAL.
You will work independently within the local and international teams, with a focus on producing excellent research and learning the state of the art in neuromorphic information processing.
You have a Master or equivalent degree in physics or in engineering (or will obtain it before 1st September 2020) with an interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence and/or photonics and experimental physics. You are prepared to collaborate with researchers and industrial partners who may work in a different discipline and to engage actively in interdisciplinary research.
You work efficiently and reliably, independently as well as in teams. You have good communication skills and scientific curiosity. Proficiency in English is expected. You are flexible and prepared to travel and to integrate into the local teams, while keeping a focus on your PhD and on delivering scientific and other project-related output.
The funding will cover the 3 years of a full-time PhD (3 270 € monthly gross salary including employer and employee deductions and taxes) in Belgium, plus 600 € per month as Mobility Allowance and if entitled a Family Allowance of 500 € per month. The starting date will be between 1st May and 1st September 2020. The ESR will also have access to funds to cover his/her research and training costs.
Applicants must hold a Master degree or have a university degree equivalent to a European Master's (5-year duration) at the time when the PhD contract will begin. Master degrees from all countries are eligible.
ESR shall at the date of recruitment by the host organisation, be in the first four years (full time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
The researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (studies, etc.) in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment.
