The study of the built environment can provide major insight into the social organisation of prehistoric communities. The project aims to investigate the formative period of urbanism and industrialization in Cyprus by using architectural evidence as the key data-set. Middle Bronze Age Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou (c. 1950-1650 BC) has been selected as principal case study for this analysis, as it represents a key-site to investigate the passage from the household-based society of Early Bronze Age Cyprus to the Urban society of Late Bronze Age. To examine the role of architecture in social reproduction the research project examines: architectural materials, manufacture as indicator of access to regional resources, technological specialisation and scale of production; the spatial organisation of buildings within the settlements and the occupation deposits accumulated within them as indicators of continuity and change in use of space and roles and relations represented by these.
