OFFER DESCRIPTION

This post-doctoral contract is part of a task that aims to investigate the long-term evolution of forest dynamics and human-forest relationships. Complementary to dendrochronology performed on living trees, the archaeo-dendrochronology will be used for a high temporal resolution reconstruction of forest's evolution and human uses over the last few centuries. In both Romanian Carpathian Mountains and the French Pyrenees, the last centuries timber extraction may be investigated through local traditional wooden buildings. This agro-pastoral heritage is currently under threat and represent a major preservation issue. In Romania, the buildings conservation strategies developed during the last 20 years led to some dendrochronological researches but only on remarkable lowland oak-made buildings, such as churches. In both countries, mountainous architecture using fir and beech timber are yet unexplored. Tree-rings chronologies preserved within building timbers, which may cover the last centuries, constitute an essential archive of past forest stands worth considering. Therefore, this post-doc will allow to go further by contextualizing the close relationship between construction practices and exploitation of forest resources.

“Reconstructing past history of Old-Growth Forests (OGFs) and timber use
using archaeo-dendrochronology”
This postdoc is part of a European project untitled: « The last European old-growth fir-BEech forests: a loNg-term and global stuDY for their better understanding, conServation and management (BENDYS). OGFs in Europe represent less than 1 % of the forested land but are still considered as a major issue for biodiversity conservation and to tackle climate change. Funded by the ANR (French national research funding agency), this project aims at questioning the state of reference of these forests as a basis for their environmental management. Following an interdisciplinary approach based on various disciplines such as archaeology, dendrochronology, charcoal analysis, palynology, history and ecology, it aims to understand past and current trajectories of these ecosystems in Romania and in France.

The candidate must have to carry on team fieldwork (with at least 2 persons) in remote mountain areas. Furthermore, a very good physical ability is required for hiking and carrying heavy equipment and samples on steep slopes, sometimes in rough weather.

Eligibility criteria

Strong experience in dendrochronology, medieval and post-medieval building archaeology and mountain archaeology is required (experience after PhD less than 2 years). High skills in archeological and dendrochronological methods are mandatory (stratigraphy, technical drawing, chronological phasing, tree-rings measurement, crossdating). The candidate must have very good skills in dendrochronological sampling in archaeological contexts and living forests (mechanical and manual core drill, chainsaw). Furthermore, a very good level of the use of dendrochronological hardware and software (Lintab, TsapWin, DendronIV, Cdendro) is obviously required as well as vectorization software. Finally, a good level in both spoken and written English and at least another language used in the project (French, Romanian).
