Patient-derived cancer xenografts (PDXs), developed by transplanting fragments of a patient’s tumour into immunodeficient mice, are increasingly recognised as clinically relevant preclinical models, particularly for the development of molecularly stratified therapies (see Byrne AT et al., Nat. Rev. Cancer 2017 for a review). Several small- to mid-scale collections of PDX models for multiple cancer pathologies have been established by academic laboratories across Europe, which are mostly exchanged through discrete material transfer agreements under collaborative studies. In addition, each research group has developed its own methodologies, with few comparative technical and methodological studies being available. Besides, efforts to standardise and harmonise study design, data analysis and reporting are also needed. As an initiative toward integration of PDX collections across European cancer centres and university hospitals, we established in 2013 the EurOPDX Consortium. The Consortium and other key academic and SME partners were awarded in 2017 a four year 5 million grant to build the EurOPDX Research Infrastructure, in order to organise the access to PDX models, expertise and resources of the EurOPDX Consortium to academic researchers and industry (European Union Horizon 2020 programme grant agreement #731105, EDIReX project, February 2018 – January 2022).
As the new Manager of the EurOPDX Research Infrastructure (RI), you will have two main responsibilities: (i) following up the progress of the EDIReX project in line with the Grant Agreement with the European Commission, and (ii) developing the EurOPDX RI towards operational and financial sustainability, beyond the current grant. For this, you will work in close collaboration with the Coordinator of the project (Prof. Enzo Medico, University of Torino, Italy), with members of the project Steering Committee and with the SME currently managing the EDIReX project, seeding science SRL (Limelette, Belgium).
Activities will mainly include:
- Drive strategic discussions about the sustainability of the EurOPDX RI, both within the consortium and with external organizations, such as other RIs, National and international research consortia, European and global organizations, funders;
- Being proactive and lead project management activities linked to the EurOPDX RI project, such as organisation of meetings to follow-up the progress of individual work packages of the work plan, organisation of general progress review meetings and meetings of the External Advisory Board, writing of meeting minutes;
- Assist the Coordinator and the project partners in the preparation of the reports to the European Commission;
- Prepare for the next RI funding application and seek for more funding opportunities.
