Overlapping citizen bodies and collective memberships in the Roman world

The research focuses on case studies (3rd BCE-1st CE) of integration of communities into a civic horizon that can be described as "overlapping," in which multiple collective memberships coexist, including, e.g.:
- contributio and adtributio of various types of settlement
- coexistence of Roman and pre-existing institutions, in the case of dual citizenship of the same municipalities, the phenomenon of so-called 'Doppelgemeinden'
- co-presence of institutions of the polis and politeumata internal to it in the cities of the eastern Mediterranean.
The case studies will be analyzed with the aim of investigating the complex dynamic between integration into a single civic and legal system and the co-presence of different levels of civic belonging expressed by the individual communities included in that system. In this sense, particular emphasis is due to the maintenance of cultic practices or institutional elements, as well as the identification of community spaces and places of memory.
