Inspired by nature and driven by technology, researchers from the Biomechanics Research Unit develop in silico and in vitro tools to increase understanding of pathophysiological processes and design novel treatment strategies. Following a strong interdisciplinary and integrative approach, their tools encompass multiple time/length scales, various biological application domains and all R&D phases from bench to bedside. Being a diverse and open group, they actively collaborate with international academic partners, clinical partners, industry, patient organizations, regulators and policy makers.
Thanks to recently awarded ERC and national grants, we are hiring highly motivated, enthusiastic post-doctoral researchers to work on the following projects:
- Digital twin for perfusion bioreactor set-up: we have developed an in-house perfusion bioreactor system as well as a computer model capturing the biological processes taking place inside said bioreactor. In order for the model to become a real digital twin, a real-time connection between the in vitro set-up and in vivo model needs to be made in the monitoring & control software. Design adaptations to the bioreactor can be implemented in order to further automate the system or increase its versatility. Exploration of the use of this bioreactor in industrial context is part of the goals of the project.
- Mesofluidics system to mimick post-implantation environment: We are looking to further develop an in-house prototype of a 2D+ mesofluidics system that aims to mimic the in vivo environment encountered by tissue engineering constructs immediately upon implantation (including hypoxia and inflammation). The work will involve the development or implementation of the necessary online quality controls (image & medium-based).
The research will be carried out in close collaboration with cell biologists, medical doctors and fellow (bio)engineers. For practical work regarding the design of the bioreactor/mesofluidics set-up or their control software, the candidate can rely on the help of our team’s excellent technical engineer. Several useful tools have already been developed by our team (or within the Tissue Engineering platform our team is part of) and are available for use within the context of this research projects. These tools include multi-scale and multi-physics modeling, lens-free imaging and related image processing, chip-based biomarker analysis for online quality control, 3D bioprinting (Regenhu 3Ddiscovery) for printing the constructs, single-cell/bulk transcriptomics & other omics analysis workflows.
We offer a 3-year full-time position at the KU Leuven (Belgium) in a young, dynamic, international & interdisciplinary environment (+/-20+ researchers) with a state-of-the-art equipped laboratory for tissue engineering and extensive expertise in engineering technology development. Post-doctoral researchers will get the opportunity to do research in a strong academic/translational environment and develop their track record, whether they choose to aim for a career in academia, industry or public service. Initiative and innovation are very much welcomed; researchers will furthermore be encouraged to participate in grant writing, (MSc) student supervision and science communication activities.
