PROJECT TITLE: Targeting mechanisms of pancreatic cancer resistance against therapy: specific role of tumour microenvironment (the project is carried out within the HOMING programme of the Foundation for Polish Science)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Tumour resistance against therapy is one of the leading unresolved health problems. The Project aims to investigate how the tissue redox imbalance in cancers protects them against pharmacological treatment. This will be studied in malignant tumours, known to develop a characteristic stromal microenvironment that affects the efficiency of all currently approved therapeutic approaches, and supports the processes of metastasis formation. The focus will be on the cellular effectors of a desmoplastic reaction, mainly on pancreatic stellate cells. Two pancreatic tumour models will be characterised in terms of the fibrosis development, and a novel therapeutic approach will be proposed that could target tumour stroma.

REQUIREMENTS/ROLE IN THE PROJECT: Candidates should have a Master’s or Bachelor degree in biology or related discipline, and have a good understanding of cell biology, molecular biology and advanced (bio)imaging techniques. Successful candidate will be assigned an individual work pack in line with the proposed project and is expected to contribute actively towards reaching the project’s objectives. The job involves predominantly laboratory experiments in vivo and/or in vitro. The doctoral student is expected to contribute markedly to preparation of original research and literature review manuscripts for publication.

Benefits

• An opportunity to become involved in an international research project

• Stimulating and friendly work environment

• Training in state-of-the-art imaging techniques, in vivo work, histological techniques and others

• Mentoring

• Participation in at least one international scientific meeting

• Doctoral scholarship for 12 months (subject to periodic evaluation)
