Learning with the Commons: Housing for an Urban Social Revolution.

Supervisor: Professor Leandro Medrano (FAUUSP)

Institution: Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo (FAUUSP)

This is a call for a postdoctoral position at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo.

The selected candidate will conduct a collaborative study with researchers from the Critical Thinking and Contemporary City (PC3) group at FAUUSP [www.pc3.fau.usp.br], within the subproject "Learning from the Commons: Housing for an Urban Social Revolution" of the Thematic Project "Architecture and Urbanism, addressing the social space in the 21st century: segregation strategies and appropriation tactics", funded by FAPESP. This project receives the special assistance from Professor Tom Avermaete from ETH Zurich.

The project involves the participation of FAUUSP (Brazil), GSD Harvard (USA); Polytechnic University of Madrid / UPM (Spain), Delft University of Technology / TU Delft; Royal Institute of Technology / KTH (Sweden); ETH Zurich (Switzerland).

The aim of this research project is to discuss the possible relationships between the "spatial models" applied to housing production and the concept of the "commons". This will be done through detailed analysis from selected case studies and critical reflection upon the evolution of housing concepts. Thus, it is expected that it contributes to the development of a collective knowledge base.

Candidate requirements

In addition to being familiar with this field of research’s references and theoretical frameworks, the candidate should also be able to search and map original projects either in publications or at the archives of research centers or institutions and architectural offices involved in the projects. The candidate is expected to have experience of the critical analysis of architecture and urbanism projects. It is also important to have previous experience of publications in peer-reviewed indexed scientific journals.

The candidate should still fulfill the requirements and compromises established by FAPESP, according to the norms available at its official website (http://www.fapesp.br/270).

Planned Activities

  • Mentoring of Undergraduate Research students;

  • Participation in weekly meetings with the PC3 Research Group;

  • Assistance in teaching activities at FAUUSP;

  • Full willingness to research;

  • Support and collaboration in academic events held by the PC3 Research Group;

  • Cooperation in composing articles

Candidates having good social relationships and ability with interpersonal communication, as well as fluency in English, are welcome.

The postdoctoral fellowship is available for an initial 12 months’ period, starting from the first semester of 2020, renewable for an additional 12 months’.

The monthly fee is R $ 7,373.10 / month (about 7.4 minimum wages / month), in addition to the Technical Reserve that may be used in research-related activities, according to FAPESP's table of values.

Applicants should send an email to pc3@usp.br, attaching a letter of interest, two reference letters and the curriculum vitae highlighting published articles and demonstrating their skills to run the project. They should also fill out a form available here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1MKicKLBx3rSWJFkMklWLOdrx5LZdHgB8F8-Hbbwyelc/prefill

Results of the first stage of the selection process will be informed directly to participants within 30 days after the application deadline.

The selection will be initially based on the evaluation of the candidates' curriculum vitae and letter of interest. Subsequently, a personal interview will be held either at FAUUSP or via Skype, with candidates selected in the first evaluation stage, at a date to be defined by the then supervising researcher. At this stage, the applicant's skills in project-related issues (including practical questioning of techniques), ease of communication, as well as other aspects sharing common ground with the project performance will be assessed.

Collective housing, urban form and evaluation.

Supervisor: Professor Leandro Medrano (FAUUSP)

Institution: Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo (FAUUSP)

The project involves the participation of FAUUSP (Brazil), GSD Harvard (USA); Polytechnic University of Madrid / UPM (Spain), Delft University of Technology / TU Delft; Royal Institute of Technology / KTH (Sweden); ETH Zurich (Switzerland).

The aim of this research project is to map and analyze collective housing projects in the Brazilian background that present alternative solutions for housing, in view of the historically segregation trend in the country. This study should point towards new perspectives and disciplinary paradigms for understanding and intervening in current Brazilian cities and the so-called "global south", contributing to the improvement of housing architecture and its urban spaces.

Identification and analysis of counter-hegemonic projects.

Supervisor: Professor Leandro Medrano (FAUUSP)

The project involves the participation of FAUUSP (Brazil), GSD Harvard (USA); Polytechnic University of Madrid / UPM (Spain), Delft University of Technology / TU Delft; Royal Institute of Technology / KTH (Sweden); ETH Zurich (Switzerland).

The aim of this research project is to develop research methodologies and investigation tools that can identify contemporary architecture and urbanism projects that demonstrate alternative and reactive configurations in relation to urbanization processes’ typical problems. The selected projects should demonstrate this reflective and critical stance in conceptual and disciplinary structuring, as well as in project strategies: in spatiality and in the patterns that result from this intervention in the territory. For the purposes of this research, case studies in Latin America should be given priority. An exploratory research based on a comparative perspective is proposed considering cities whose problems require both architectural and urbanistic interventions.
