Offenburg University of Applied Sciences (Offenburg, Germany) offers two open positions starting from 01 April 2020 for two Doctoral Researchers (PhD students) at the Institute of Energy Systems Technology (INES), specifically in the field of lithium-ion battery modeling and simulation.
Job description: The following two PhD projects are offered:
1. “Chemical, mechanical and transport coupling between the electrodes of a lithium-ion battery: Influence on cell performance and aging”. Goal is the understanding of degradation mechanisms of lithium-ion battery cells.
2. “Operando diagnostics of the state of health of lithium-ion batteries with physicochemical cell aging models”. Goal is the development of a diagnostic method for the aging level of a lithium-ion battery cell.
In both projects, the work includes the development and application of multi-physics lithium-ion battery models, implementation in MATLAB and in-house C code, preparation of publications and international conference contributions, and cooperation within in graduate college SiMET including participation in the SiMET soft-skill program.
Research environment: The research activities of the Institute of Energy Systems Technology (INES) focus on investigations and development of systems for the sustainable use of energy. One of the research topics is the development and application of multi-scale and multi-physics mathematical models for lithium-ion batteries. Goal is the knowledge-based development of batteries and fuel cells with improved performance, durability, energy density, and safety. The two PhD positions will be part of the DFG-funded graduate college SiMET - Simulation of mechano-electro-thermal processes in lithium-ion batteries taking place in cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Goal of SiMET is to enhance the theoretical understanding of the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of lithium-ion batteries. The joint training of doctoral researchers will take place within a structured concept of qualification and guidance on an individual level, a cross-group level, and on an international scientific level.
Salary is according to TV-L E 13, 100 %.
REQUIRED LANGUAGESENGLISH: Good
The applicant must have a very good master degree in engineering or science (energy technology, electrical engineering, process engineering, physics, chemistry or similar). Knowledge on battery technology and/or mathematical modeling, for example as part of a master thesis, is advantageous.
