Position: The Future Oceans Lab (FOL) of the Marine Research Center (CIM) at the University of Vigo (Spain) is seeking applications for a 2-year project researcher position based in Vigo (Spain). The researcher will be responsible for managing and developing the tasks of an Interreg-MED project where the group participates as partner with the tasks of developing socio-ecological vulnerability assessments in marine protected areas of the Mediterranean Sea. The successful candidate will work with Elena Ojea and the rest of the consortia starting early 2020.

 

Job Description:

The successful applicant will be in charge of the development of the project tasks related to the design and implementation of climate vulnerability assessments. He/she will be supported by the Principal Investigator and the Interreg-MED project consortia (MPA-Engage). This is a highly multidisciplinary project to enhance the role of MPAs as nature-based solutions to climate change. The work of the candidate will be highly applied to the management Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and will require the design and development of methodological protocols, training of stakeholders in the field and continuous follow up of the tasks. MPA-Engage will develop a multi-level approach from an ecological, social and an economic perspective. The successful candidate will have the chance to apply socio-ecological vulnerability assessments in MPAs and coordinate the vulnerability assessments in the network of MPAs. This information will be used to develop specific site-based adaptation plans.

We are looking for a Master’s degree with background in Marine Ecosystems, management and stakeholder engagement that is highly motivated, and with great technical, language, and team work skills. We expect that the candidate is highly independent, has leading and managing abilities, ability to work with a consortia of international partners, and social abilities to interact with stakeholders.

Benefits

Salary and Benefits:

  • Start date is February 2020, for a 24-months and a 2-month trial period.
  • Salary level and step commensurate with qualifications, in the range of 1.500 – 2.000€ gross per month.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum Qualifications:

At the time of recruitment the candidate:

  • A Master’s degree in marine ecology, ocean sustainability, climate change, environmental science and management, fishery science or related field.
  • Experience in implementing environmental, research or capacity building projects of at least 1 year.
  • Coding skills and experience with R or similar software for data visualization.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English, to contribute to reports and peer-reviewed scientific publications, deliver presentations, and translate scientific concepts for diverse audiences.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience leading project tasks and implementation;
  • Experience with qualitative approaches to environmental management, stakeholder analysis, focus groups, preference analysis, participative methods, etc.;
  • Experience in ecological and social indicators, indices and other representations of complex problems. Experience in climate vulnerability assessments will be highly valued;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain strong relationships with academic, NGO and government partners and to work effectively as part of a highly collaborative research team;
  • Willingness to travel internationally;
  • Written and spoken Spanish, French or Italian.

Top candidates will be invited to an individual online interview. The final decision criteria will be based on merits (70%) and the interview (30%).
