<p><strong>The Pirbright Institute </strong></p>

<p><strong>Organisation position and purpose: </strong></p>
<p>The post holder will broadly work to investigate the role of different immune cells in pathogenesis of a cancer model in chickens. Our current projects involve&nbsp;studying the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the induction of protective immune responses against viral infections such as Marek&rsquo;s Disease Virus and Avian Influenza Virus in chicken. We are a friendly and multicultural research team composed of principal investigator, two postdocs and two PhD students, collaborating with several groups within the institute and other UK and international Institutions.</p>
<p>The Postdoctoral fellow will be a pivotal member of the team supporting the Avian Immunology research group in delivering excellent science and helping to perform <em>in vivo</em> and <em>in vitro</em> experiments to study host-pathogen interaction in chickens as part of the wider Institute scientific strategy. This position will report to head of Avian Immunology Group, Dr. Shahriar Behboudi.</p>

<p><strong>Main duties and responsibility </strong></p>
<p></p>
<ul>
<li>Developing research project to meet the objectives outlined in the project funded by core funded research objectives of the group and plan new studies with other team members</li>
<li>Supporting other scientists to advance our understanding on host-pathogen interaction</li>
<li>Obtaining relevant home office licenses for animal experimentation and conducting <em>in vivo</em> experiments in chickens</li>
<li>Generating high impact research publications based on the findings from the research projects</li>
<li>Contributing to and helping to develop innovative research projects for securing additional funding</li>
<li>Supporting senior colleagues to enhance the international impact of the Institute by participation in meetings, joint projects and other activities</li>
<li>Supporting senior and junior colleagues and sharing laboratory and research resources</li>
<li>Supporting the operational and academic management activities of the Institute</li>
<li>Help with the day-to-day supervision and training of students</li>

<li>Ability to work independently as well as part of a team</li>
<li>Evidence of efficient working and keeping well organised archives and high quality records of research data</li>
<li>A willingness to show initiative in developing and planning new strategies and new techniques and to achieve research goals</li>
<li>Ability to demonstrate excellent and effective communications with other laboratory members and can provide both written and oral examples of liaising regularly with the Group Leader to develop and discuss ideas</li>

<p><strong>Specific requirements</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Proven research skills in cellular and molecular immunology</li>
<li>The ability to manage the day-to-day running of a research project</li>
</ul>
<p>Essential</p>
<ul>
<li>A PhD or equivalent in a relevant branch of biosciences</li>
<li>An excellent record of research productivity, commensurate to the applicant&rsquo;s experience</li>
<li>Experience in immunology including flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISPOT and proliferation assay</li>
<li>Experience in cellular biology techniques</li>
<li>Evidence of working with animals</li>
<li>Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with funding bodies, peer-review groups, government agencies</li>
<li>Evidence of experience of change-management, influencing and strategic vision</li>
</ul>
<p>Desirable</p>
<ul>
<li>Experience of working in a laboratory environment</li>
<li>Evidence of networking skills with the ability to build effective collaborative relationships</li>
<li>Basic computer skills including use of Microsoft office packages, experience in data presentation and statistical analyses</li>
<li>Evidence of experience and vision to carry out scientific research in a multi-disciplinary environment</li>
</ul>
