RESEARCH FIELD Political Communication / Communication / Social networks

The position to be filled is part of the research project “Polarization, duplication of active audiences and populism in Twitter. Analysis of the influence of populist discourses in political discussions in Spain (2016-2020) (DATAPOP)” funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICINN). The project offers an perfect environment for interdisciplinary research at the intersection between political science, communication and data science.

Your tasks will be:

  • Research on the political content of Twitter in Spain
  • Classification, processing, analysis and visualisation of Twitter data
  • Writing academic papers and attend international conferences

Your profile:

  • University degree PhD (completed or in completion) in communication or political science, with an expertise in content analysis and quantitative methods of research
  • Knowledge of computational science methods (analysis of social media, social network analysis) and programming languages (Python/Java)
  • Competences in quantitative data analysis
  • Good command of English (spoken and written). Knowledge of Spanish and/or Catalan is welcome but it is not compulsory
  • Knowledge in political science and of the academic literature on populism is also welcome but it is not compulsory

Skills/Qualifications

Digital media are one of the most important platforms for populists to promote, bupassing traditional gatekeepers. In this project, we use data analysis methods to:

(1) analyze content published by populist and no populist parties;

(2) link populist messages to the impact on Twitter;

(3) analyze the overlaps between communities of retweeters;

(4) analyze the changes experimented in the networks of interactions in the different general elections in Spain.

Specific Requirements

Your profile:

  • University degree PhD (completed or in completion) in communication or political science, with an expertise in content analysis and quantitative methods of research.

    Knowledge of computational science methods (analysis of social media, social network analysis) and programming languages (Python/Java)

  • Competences in quantitative data analysis

  • Good command of English (spoken and written). Knowledge of Spanish and/or Catalan is welcome but it is not compulsory
