Project Title: Magnetostrictive-piezoelectric nanoparticles for deep neural (muscle) wireless stimulation.

 

Objectives: Artificial multiferroic nanostructures with different shapes and composition will be prepared by merging colloidal nanotemplating and physical vapour deposition. Some of these multiferroic nanostructures will be transferred or embedded in biocompatible hydrogels or elastomer films; cytotoxicity and biofunctionalization studies will be performed; in-vitro demonstration of magetoelectric stimulation of muscle and neuron cells will be assessed.

 

Expected results: Synthesis of biocompatible multiferroic particles. magnetoelectric actuation using relatively low AC magnetic fields for non-invasive muscle/deep brain stimulation.

Planned secondments: Host1: Jozef Stefan Institut, length: 1 month, purpose: synthesis of new types of anisotropic NPs; Host2: ETZH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich), length: 2 months, purpose: in-vitro neural stimulation studies using a station at different frequencies; Host3: Guger Technologies Medical Engineering OG, length: 2 months, purpose: integration of the stimulation procedures into a skull phantom and assessment of related bioelectronics/(+signal processing).

The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is a non-profit foundation, and one of the centres of the CERCA Institution (https://icn2.cat/en/). Its mission is to achieve scientific and technological excellence in the fields of nanotechnology and nanoscience. We do so by incubating new fundamental knowledge and ideas in the broad area of nanoscience, and facilitating the adoption and integration of nanotechnologies into society and industry. To this end, activity at the ICN2 encompasses: (i) Basic science, including frontier areas, and (ii) Applied Research: in areas of in-house expertise and in conjunction with industry, (iii) Technology Transfer: intellectual property protection and business development as a result of R&D efforts. ICN2’s achievements were recognized by the Spanish Government in 2014 with the award of the prestigious Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence accreditation (renewed in 2018), so it is part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), a scientific foundation of seven of Catalonia’s research centres with this distinction. 266 people from 30 different countries work at ICN2, 224 of them are researchers. The scientific production of the ICN2 is remarkable; with 187 original papers in 2017, an average impact factor of 7.02 and a total of 8,771 citations. The Magnetic Nanostructures Group (https://icn2.cat/en/magnetic-nanostructures-group) seeks to improve the functional properties of diverse types of magnetic and magnetophotonic nanostructures. The group combines state-of-the-art lithography and chemical synthesis with structural, morphological, optical and magnetic characterisation to investigate diverse basic aspects of exchange coupled nanostructures and magnetophotonic nanostructures. The goal is the application of these nanostructures for advanced and externally controlled nanotherapies, contrast agents, environmental remediation and sensors.

BeMAGIC project is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network that offers the possibility to pursue the PhD within the Network at different universities/research centres/companies across Europe. The duration of the appointment is 3 years, starting in March 2020, and the gross salary is 33788,7 € / year. Importantly, the Marie Curie eligibility criteria must be respected. Eligible early-stage researchers (ESRs) are those who are, at the date of recruitment by the host institution, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate. In addition, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Researchers can be nationals of any country (including all countries outside Europe).
