The European Research Council (ERC) project Anatomy in Ancient Greece and Rome: An Interactive Visual and Textual Atlas (ATLOMY) at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the direction of Dr. Orly Lewis is offering a Post-Doctoral scholarship beginning October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. Scholars who have received their Ph.D. after October 1st 2015 or will submit their Ph.D. no later than October 1st 2020 are eligible to apply.

The successful candidate will be part of a unique interdisciplinary team which will work together to produce a visual and textual map and analysis of Greco-Roman anatomical ideas, research and terminology and to re-enact and document ancient anatomical empirical research. The successful candidate will focus on the ideas and research of Galen, in particular his work On Anatomical Procedures.

This position offers the opportunity to be part of an innovative and groundbreaking research which will apply historical, philological and empirical methods as well as digital design and development. The appointed fellow will work closely with other team members from the fields of history of science, classics, modern veterinary and human medicine, 3D modelling and software development. S/he will participate in the project's colloquium, workshops and its other activities and is expected to contribute to the project’s collaborative outputs and produce project-related article(s) and/or a monograph.

Benefits

The scholarship will be granted for a maximum of five years (subject to review at the end of each year).
 
The fellow will receive a monthly stipend of approximately 10,000 NIS; additional funding for travel to academic meetings abroad will be available following approval.
 
The fellow will have an office at the Mount Scopus Campus in Jerusalem and must be present in the office at least 3 full days a week and devote 100% of their time to the project and their research.
 
Teaching is not required, but might be possible if the fellow wishes to. Knowledge of Hebrew is not required.

 

 

 

Eligibility criteria

Scholars who have received their Ph.D. after October 1st 2015 or will submit their Ph.D. no later than October 1st 2020 are eligible to apply.

Selection process

Interested individuals are requested to submit the following documents (in one PDF file):

(i) Introduction letter describing your academic experience and motivation for participating in the project (2-3 pages)

(ii) Curriculum vitae

(iii) Abstract of the PhD dissertation

(iv) Letters of evaluation of the PhD dissertation (if available)

(v) A writing sample: dissertation chapter or a paper that has been published or accepted for

publication (no more than 30 pages);

(vi) Two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to atlomyproject@savion.huji.ac.il

Skills/Qualifications

Scholars who have received their Ph.D. after October 1st 2015 or will submit their Ph.D. no later than October 1st 2020 are eligible to apply.

  • Proven academic excellence
  • Excellent skills in Ancient Greek
  • Proven experience in studying ancient medical and/or biological texts (experience with Galenic texts is an advantage)
  • Ability to participate in academic discussions in English
  • An interest and ability to work in a team

*An ability to read Arabic or a willingness to study it is an advantage, since some of the relevant works have survived only in Arabic.
