A total of 15 PhD positions are available at 8 universities, 1 research centre and 4 industries, in the framework of the European Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) zEPHYR https://www.h2020-zephyr.eu/. This project is focused on the development of performant wind farms by addressing simultaneously the individual performance of each turbine composing the wind farm, and the efficient harvesting of the local wind resources in on-shore and urban environments. The researchers recruited in zEPHYR will investigate emerging technologies through laboratory experiments, theoretical modelling and numerical simulations addressing the following aspects: mesoscale and microscale atmospheric boundary layer simulations, rotor aerodynamics, aeroacoustics and structural dynamics, atmospheric propagation and human factors, uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis and multi-physical optimization.

In that context, the Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery Polish Academy of Sciences (IMP PAN) is offering an ESR position for a PhD project entitled:

Small VAWTs and HAWTs wind turbines for municipal, low noise applications

In urban environment noise and safety are the most important aspects of a wind turbine quality. A new idea of small wind turbine for prosumer and urban applications has been developed focused on safety as main objective. This is a turbine with vertical rotor axis and the prototype of 1 kW has been built and the 5 kW module is under construction. These prototypes will be investigated towards its noise generation at different winds. The proposed research topic concerns experimental and numerical simulations of this innovative wind turbine operation. The main objective will be to find the relation between the power and noise characteristics.

The PhD will be mainly based at the IMP PAN (Aerodynamics Department) and supervised by Prof. Piotr Doerffer, and several secondments are foreseen at partner institutions of the zEPHYR network: von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (BE), The Nottingham Trent University (UK), Enerall srl (BE).

 

The contract can start between the 1st of June 2020 and the 1st of August 2020.

The multidisciplinary topics addressed in zEPHYR are scientifically challenging and of high technological and economical relevance, promising interesting career perspectives in academic and multi-sectorial industrial environments. Eligibility criteria

The candidate at the time of recruitment has to be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of her/his research careers and has not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Full-Time Equivalent Research Experience is measured from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate (either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited or seconded), even if a doctorate was never started or envisaged.

Eligible candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Poland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately beforethe recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
