OFFER DESCRIPTION

A total of 15 PhD positions are available at 8 universities, 1 research centre and 4 industries, in the framework of the European Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) zEPHYR https://www.h2020-zephyr.eu/. This project is focused on the development of performant wind farms by addressing simultaneously the individual performance of each turbine composing the wind farm, and the efficient harvesting of the local wind resources in on-shore and urban environments. The researchers recruited in zEPHYR will investigate emerging technologies through laboratory experiments, theoretical modelling and numerical simulations addressing the following aspects: mesoscale and microscale atmospheric boundary layer simulations, rotor aerodynamics, aeroacoustics and structural dynamics, atmospheric propagation and human factors, uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis and multi-physical optimization.

In that context, the Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery Polish Academy of Sciences (IMP PAN) is offering an ESR position for a PhD project entitled:

Improvement of model for vortex generator on wind turbine blade.

This research project is based on the development, carried out at IMP PAN, of a flow control device (Rod Vortex Generator - RVG), its application for improvement of wind turbine aerodynamic performance and effect on the generated noise. The objectives of the proposed research include theoretical, numerical and experimental investigations of flow structure, development of model for vortex generator and carrying out sensitivity study to provide guidelines for its application to various wind turbine geometries. The 3D effects of RVG on the performance and possible noise regeneration will be studied using 3D CFD simulations, evaluation of the applicability and potential benefits of RVGs for automotive applications.
The PhD will be mainly based at the IMP PAN (Aerodynamics Department) under supervision by Prof. Pawel Flaszynski, and several secondments are foreseen at partner institutions of the zEPHYR network: Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain), The Nottingham Trent University (UK), Technische Universiteit Delft (Netherlands).

The contract can start between the 1st of June 2020 and the 1st of August 2020.

Eligibility criteria

The candidate at the time of recruitment has to be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of her/his research careers and has not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Full-Time Equivalent Research Experience is measured from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate (either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited or seconded), even if a doctorate was never started or envisaged.

Eligible candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Poland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately beforethe recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
