This is NTNU

At NTNU, creating knowledge for a better world is the vision that unites our 7 000 employees and 40 000 students.

We are looking for dedicated employees to join us.

About the position

A two-year Postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT), NTNU. This position is a part of a collaborative project with SINTEF Energy Research, “Fundamentals of Pressurized Oxy-fuel Combustion for Natural Gas Semi-Closed Combined Cycles”, funded by the Research Council of Norway. The objective of the project is to advance the understanding of oxy-fuel combustion as a CO2 capture technology for natural gas fired gas turbines. Oxy-fuel combustion is based on burning the fuel with oxygen instead of air, generating an exhaust gas with a high concentration of CO2, which makes the capture less energy demanding than with other chemical processes. This type of combustion is more challenging and less documented than conventional air-based combustion.

The postdoc position take place in the framework of a collaboration between NTNU/SINTEF and CORIA (Complexe de Recherche Interprofessionnel en Aérothermochimie UMR 6614 CNRS - INSA Rouen Normandie, Université Rouen Normandie, France). The candidate is expected to spend a period of time at CORIA for the development of the advanced laser-based technique before applying it at the high-pressure combustion facility in SINTFE/NTNU for the measurement campaign under oxy-fuel conditions.

The head of the Department is Professor Terese Løvås. The position's supervision is by Professor Ivar S. Ertesvåg.

Main duties and responsibilities

The objectives are to perform instantaneous and simultaneous measurements of temperature and main species concentrations in turbulent flames by laser Spontaneous Raman Scattering (SRS) first in a multi-fluid oxyfuel combustion chamber at atmospheric pressure at CORIA in order to further develop the technique. The second part of the project, will consist in applying the technique in the high pressure (10 bar) pilot facility at SINTEF/NTNU to perform the measurement campaign under oxy-fuel conditions. This will require the development of new optical configurations to collect SRS signal despite of the limitations of optical accesses in the combustion chambers. Post-processing of experimental SRS spectra is based on automatic spectral fitting with theoretical spectra convoluted with apparatus functions determined from SRS radiation collected in-situ. During the period, the procedure of SRS spectra processing will be adapted depending on the gaseous fuel composition (methane, hydrogen, etc.) and the oxidising mixtures at different (O2 – CO2) proportion. The temperature will be obtained from methane or/and carbon dioxide spectra. One dimensional instantaneous and simultaneous measurements of CH4, O2, CO, CO2 and H2O concentrations in turbulent oxy-fuel flames diluted by carbon dioxide will allow a deep characterisation of the specificity of these combustion regimes.

Qualification requirements

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. Completion of a Norwegian doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or physics, or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

NTNU is committed to following evaluation criteria for research quality according to The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA.

Other qualifications

  • Experience on use of laser diagnostics in fluid flows or measurements in combustion is required.
  • Excellent English skills, spoken and written, are required.

Personal characteristics

  • Capacity to work in a laboratory environment with respect for HSE rules and procedures
  • Good teamworking skills
  • Good scientific writing skills

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement

We offer

Salary and conditions
