Research description

  • Research Interests of the supervisor: The living brain is never still: whether you are reading, running or sleeping, the brain and its environment pulsate in intricate rhythms. These electrical and mechanical brain pulsations, such as the delta waves associated with sleep or the cardiac- and respiration-induced pulsations of brain fluids, are crucial for the function and well-being of the brain. Conversely, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and neurological conditions such as oedema or hydrocephalus are associated with abnormalities in clearance and fluid patterns. In spite of their importance, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying these physiological processes is surprisingly limited. In recent decades, in-silico modeling, where computer models are used for the modeling of biological processes, has emerged as a key technology for encoding knowledge, for identifying mechanisms, and for predicting the response of living matter. This development has been fueled by impressive advances in medical imaging and computing power, and by harnessing interdisciplinary collaboration between mathematicians, physicists, biologists and clinicians. Now, mathematical models and computer simulations can effectively alleviate limitations in traditional experimental or clinical techniques, provide new avenues of investigation, and may ultimately change how we understand human physiology, optimal development, and optimal performance. Our research team targets ground-breaking research in applied mathematics, scientific computing, and brain physiology at Simula. The group currently comprises 15- 20 members including MSc and PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and senior researchers; applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and physicists; and with an extensive international collaborative network of mathematicians, biologists, physicians, radiologists, and clinical consultants. 

Offer description

The Simula MSCA PF Programme aims to support excellent postdoctoral fellows to apply for a Marie-Skƚodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship grant (MSCA-PF) with Simula as the host institution. The fellowship provides an opportunity to pursue a career in research, establish new collaborations, enjoy the career and personal benefits of mobility to a new research environment and a new country, and establish an independent funding track record. Importantly, the fellowship allows you to launch your career by pursuing your ideas. We invite applications from candidates with an interest in numerical analysis and scientific computing . The selected candidate will apply to the MSCA PF 2023 call (deadline September 14th 2023) for a 24-month fellowship hosted at Simula with Prof. Rognes as the main supervisor, with an optional 6-month placement within the EU member states at the end of the project period. 

Through the Simula MSCA PF Programme, selected candidates will be invited to Oslo (travel, food and accommodation expenses covered) for an in-person workshop in May 2023, where you will receive training in grant writing specific to the MSCA PF call, meet with your potential supervisor to mature your research idea further, and experience Oslo, the capital of Norway. You will receive feedback on your proposal and support in finalising your application from Simula’s external funding team.

  • Supported fellows must be in possession of a doctoral degree at the time of the call deadline. Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree are also eligible to apply. 
  • At the call deadline, supported researchers must have a maximum of 8 years of full-time equivalent experience in research, measured from the date of award of the doctoral degree. Years of experience outside research and career breaks (e.g. due to parental leave) will not count towards the amount of research experience. 
  • Recruited researchers must comply with the following mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Norway for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.
