OFFER DESCRIPTION

Altered conditions during the periconceptional (PC) period of gamete maturation and early embryonic development have long lasting effects on the health of the progeny, including the childhood, adolescent and adult-life onset of cardiovascular, metabolic and neurological diseases.

Increasing evidence from epidemiological and animal model studies shows that children worldwide exhibit conditions and disease risks associated with the exposures of their parents, including chemical stressors before and during pregnancy, reproductive failure, adverse pregnancy outcome, diabetes, obesity and nutritional compromise.

Babies born following human ART (“testtube”)interventions render this population (over 6 million world-wide) one of the largest well-defined clinical cohorts to be studied for a better understanding of the future risk of disease for current and succeeding generations in Europe.

 

The DohART-NET project focus on:

  • the integration of pre-clinical (animal and stem cell-models) and clinical studies
  • apply data linkage, bioinformatics and network science for the identification and validation of mechanisms of diseases common in early development
  • we will exploit our new understanding to promote efficient disease prevention and potential personalised therapeutic interventions in both the general and ART populations to overcome adverse disease pathways

DohART-NET is optimized for training ESRs due to the facts that:

  • the topic is progressive and much needed to improve public health over several generations, and it is integrating basic pre-clinical, translational clinical and in silico modeling approaches
  • the partnership has a highly multi- and interdisciplinary scientific and training expertise and excellence
  • there is an existing synergy by collaborations and links that the partners wish to strengthen both in science and lasting training programs in a highly inter-sectorial setting

The DohART-NET project provides an outstanding inter- and multi-disciplinary research and training environment for the ESRs, including an excellent intersectoral training opportunity of 7 academic, 3 industrial beneficiaries and 4 non-academic partner organisations, ranging from SMEs and NGOs to a large medical company.

Non academic sector will provide numerous secondment opportunities embedded into the individual ESR training programs, exposing all of the students to industrial school-of-thought and quality assurance systems.

Industrial sector will contribute to trainings in order to raise a new generation of researcher with entrepreneurial knowledge and mind-set capable of contributing effectively to the knowledge-based economy and society.

ESR 7 Rotterdam-The Netherlands-ERASMUS MC

Title of the PhD topic (ESR 7)Does PC maternal obesity affect embryonic health and long-term health?

Planned secondments (ESR 7)

- University of Southampton, Faculty of Medicine, Topic: Targeted comparative analysis of EMC datasets with USH rodent overnutrition datasets :, 2 months, (M 35-M36)

- IVI Valencia, Topic: Growth trajectories in IVI datasets , 2 months, (M12-M13)

Objectives (ESR7): The applicant will develop a multidisciplinary project focused on investigating the impact of preconceptional maternal obesity and underlying pathways of embryonic, fetal and newborn health. The study will be conducted in the unique and ongoing Rotterdam Periconceptional Cohort (Predict study). The Predict study is designed as a tertiary hospital-based, prospective open birth cohort study.

Embryonic, fetal and newborn health will be investigated longitudinally using state-of-the-art imaging techniques like three-dimensional ultrasound and virtual reality techniques. Using these techniques different structures, e.g. in the brain, can be investigated in detail and very reliable in relation to maternal obesity. Besides ultrasound imaging data, also questionnaires and blood samples are available for study.

The ideal candidate should have solid knowledge in Clinical Medicine (and Obstetrics and Gynaecology), ideally with a Masters level in Medicine and/or Epidemiology. Research experience is a big advantage and practical experience in handling large databases and in biostatistics and or bioinformatics would be preferred, but not required.

The project implies a series of secondments at partner labs for additional training. The successful candidate will participate in the network’s training activities and work placements at the laboratories of the participating academic and industrial teams. Regular meetings and workshops within the EU-funded DohART-NET International Training Network will supplement the training and support provided at Erasmus University Medical Center.

Terms of employment: The gross monthly salary will be based on a full-time working week of 36 hours. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).

In case of an PhD appointment: You will receive a temporary position for 3 years (scale OIO). The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).

Eligibility criteria

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae , a motivation letter and 2 letters of recommendation .

The candidate must not hold a PhD.

The candidate must have less than 4 years of full time  – including any period - of research experience at the signature of the contract. (This is measured from the date when the degree was obtained, which formally entitles the candidate to embark a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained, or in the country in which the research training is provided. Degree: MSc, MD, DVM and BSC in some countries.)

At the time of selection, the candidate must have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization/recruiting institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to selection. Short stays such as holidays are not considered.

Excellent knowledge of the spoken, written English language and excellent communication and team working skills are required.
