Role

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. position (“Early Stage Researcher”) to be funded by the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “Active Matter: From Fundamental Science to Technological Applications” within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission. In this role, the candidate will conduct both individual and collaborative research projects, analyze and interpret research data, write up and publish results, and perform public engagement and outreach activities. The applicant will be working towards a Ph.D. degree, supported by a carefully chosen supervisory team that maximizes both scientific excellence as well as interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration. Finally, she/he will not only receive state-of-the-art science/technology training but will also benefit from a unique soft-skills training program.

  • Monthly the gross salary is around 3200 EUR.
  • In order to be approved for MSCA financing the applicant, at the time for the application, should not have resided in Turkey for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Moreover, the applicant must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Project description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the micro/nano swimmers' behavior under applied acoustic radiation.

To develop experimental tools for understanding the bulk properties of active matter under various pressure distributions created via acoustic disturbances. the properties of acoustic radiation such as its contactless nature, its potential of wide range trapping, and applicability to any type of particles without damaging make the acoustic radiation force a likely relevant tool for external manipulation.

Theoretical studies on acoustic radiation forces concentrate only on spherical particles with uniform density and compressibility. In contemplation of studying micro- or nano-rods, the theory will be generalized for various geometries, specifically for cylindrical particles with non-uniform densities. Also, the secondary effect of the acoustic fields on the particles which are responsible for particle-particle interaction will be investigated. physical models of active particles vary according to the ambient conditions and intrinsic particle properties. the analytic equation of the acoustic radiation forces will be integrated with the dynamic equations of a model containing both active motion and hydrodynamic interactions for the case of high number densities. The results provided by the theoretical study and simulations will be used in designing the experimental setup. For exploiting the individual behavior under acoustic disturbances, a hybrid system containing both acoustic fields and optical traps will be built. This procedure with the computational toolboxes developed data analysis and simulation techniques, and experimental setups will be beneficial for understanding both the individual and collective behavior of active matter. Also, more comprehensive studies could be built upon this study such as the behavior of active colloids inside a fluid with various pressure distributions.

Skills/Qualifications

The candidate will have preferably a Master degree in Engineering, Physics or closely related discipline. Particularly skilled candidates who do not hold a Master degree but an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Physics or closely related disciplines could be considered for admission to direct PhD program. GPA > 3.00 is required for applicants with an undergraduate degree.
