We are looking for a motivated early stage researcher in the field of smart CMOS image sensor design, in particular in the incorporation of feature extraction, image processing and image compression at sensor level. This work will be part of a larger project on enabling vision technologies for intelligent transportation, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. The research fellow will be hosted at the Institute of Microelectronics of Seville (IMSE) —a joint research center participated by CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) and the University of Seville— for a period of 48 months with the aim of obtaining a PhD degree. The doctoral training may include a short stays at collaborating R+D centers. The PhD student will work at the IMSE research group on Smart Imagers and Vision Chips. The new researcher will work in a team with experienced researchers, cooperating with other students in the same area.

Objectives

Artificial vision is gaining momentum as a key enabling technology in many application scenarios like autonomous vehicles, industry 4.0, robotics or virtual/augmented reality. This trend emerges from significant advances along the visual signal chain, from image sensing technologies to pattern recognition and machine learning. Challenges on the sensory elements are multiple. Image sensors adapted to the aforementioned application environments need to operate at high speed, cover a high dynamic range and feature a high sensitivity at low light. But vision is not restricted to capturing light-intensity maps and distance estimations. The challenge at the sensory plane is ultimately concerned with the efficient extraction of the relevant information contained in the visual stimulus. Any alternative representations of the scene that constitute an effective reduction of the visual data flow in favor of distinctive features can be the key to practical implementation of embedded vision systems. The objective of this thesis will be to explore the possibilities to incorporate compressive sampling at the sensor chip and study the implementation of machine learning algorithms in the compressed space.

Benefits

You will receive a PhD scholarship according to the general conditions at CSIC. The scholarship includes full social security coverage and a gross monthly amount of 1400 EUR/month approx. The contract will also cover the tuition for the PhD program at the University of Seville and travelling and accommodation for the research stay. The contract will be for 4 years and will start in the first quarter of 2020.

Eligibility criteria

You have a Master of Science (MS) degree in disciplines like Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics, at the start of the PhD and a background in Microelectronics. Candidates with a MS in other disciplines other than these but with a strong knowledge of Solid-State Circuit Design and/or Electronic Device Physics may also be considered.

Only candidates without a PhD and without having received a PhD scholarship before can be considered. CSIC implements gender neutral recruitment and selection procedures. Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

Specific Requirements

You have a strong interest in analog and mixed-signal integrated circuit design, CMOS image sensors, as well as a good knowledge of circuit theory and electronic device physics, as well as circuit design skills. In our lab, you will mainly use Cadence Design Framework and hardware description languages like Verilog and Verilog-AMS, TCAD tools as well as MATLAB. The research work will involve studying CMOS-compatible structures to measure light intensity, the design of pixels, the design and test of prototype chips containing these pixels and the collaboration on the design of an embedded vision system based on these sensors.
