NExt generation of Tunable LASers for optical coherence tomography (ITN-NETLAS)

Two Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher/PhD positions for 36 months starting from 1st February and 1st of April 2020, respectively, are available within the Institute for Microwave Engineering and Photonics (Photonics group/ Terahertz Devices and Systems group). These are supported by an EU funded Marie Curie Innovative Training Network, 860807, jointly organised with 14 other universities, companies and hospitals in Europe. Students will spend most of their time in Darmstadt, Germany with secondments to at least one University and one industrial partner each. Research will focus on innovative solutions for swept sources for optical coherence tomography based on widely tunable 1550 nm VCSELs. The first topic will target development and controlling of electrostatically tunable MEMS-DBR VCSELs to increase tuning speed. Hereby processing, modeling and characterizations are the main objectives. The second topic will investigate a novel means for tuning the effective cavity length of a VCSEL by including a material with a high electro-optical coefficient. Modelling, processing, characterization are the main objectives. Supervision will be provided in a European setting where specialized and complementary training will be provided at several sites as well as during network events.

At the time of recruitment, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • (First) master degree not more than four years (full-time equivalent) ago
  • Not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to appointment
  • Degree in Physics, Material Sciences or Electrical Engineering

Ideally, the applicants have a solid background in the following topics:

  • Theoretical and experimental optics
  • Experience with processing in a clean room environment
  • Knowledge of Matlab and Comsol are a plus

We expect excellent, independent research and are supporting publications at renowned international conferences and in leading scientific journals. Female applicants are highly encouraged. In case of equal qualification, applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 will be given preference.

The applicant will be paid a full-time salary, subject to Marie Curie regulations. Moreover the applicant will get in touch with numerous labs and research facilities around Europe as well as visit and present their work at international conferences.
