The position is part of the Innovative Training Network (ITN) “PROTON”. The network is devoted to the investigation of proton transport and proton‐coupled transport. It is funded under Marie Sklodowska‐Curie actions (H2020‐MSCA‐ITN‐2019, grant agreement number: 860592).
The successful applicant will perform her/his studies and research at the

Freie Universität Berlin; Department of Physics in the group of Prof. Dr. Nicoleta Bondar.

The group applies theoretical biophysics methods to understand the mechanism of complex proteins. Key aspects are the role of protonation dynamics in membrane protein function, coupling between a chemical reaction (proton transfer, hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate) and large-scale conformational changes, and the role of the lipid membrane environment in membrane protein function.

The successful applicant will (i) Derive all-atom models of phosphatidylserine-containing lipid membranes with various concentrations of lipids and cholesterol; (ii) Design and implement web-based data analysis tools to visualize membrane dynamics and use these tools to characterize the dynamics of lipid/water hydrogen bonding networks at interfaces of membranes that contain phosphatidylserine lipids; (3) Characterize the energetics of proton transfer in small lipid headgroup/water clusters taken from phosphatidylserine-containing membranes; (4) Characterize the lipid interactions of inhibitor-bound HV1, a proton channel that is thought to be a potential biomarker of cancer cells.

Applicants must, at the date of recruitment by PROTON

1.  be in the first four years (full‐time equivalent research experience measured from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate) of their research careers

2. should not have been awarded a doctoral degree

3. must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. This excludes short stays such as holidays or compulsory national service.

Additional qualifications:

1. Experience with computational scientific work.
2. Experience with molecular dynamics simulation.
3. Understanding of physical chemistry of biomolecular systems.
4. Publications in international journals/attendance of international conferences in physics, chemistry,
or biophysics.
5. Experience with programming or scripting languages. Ability to use languages for data analysis.
6. Soft skills: presentation skill, team working ability

4. We look for students with exceptional academic performance holding or very close to completing their Master degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, Biochemistry or closely related subjects,

5. Knowledge of the English language is essential.
