This 50% four-year postdoctoral position will work on a project focusing on the newly acquired Alain Van Passen comics collection at Ghent University,which includes Francophone comics magazines from the 1930s through the 1980s. This project seeks to show how comics for very young readers (less than 8 years of age, who are gradually acquiring reading skills) has been established, since 1925, as a growing category in Francophone comics publishing, coinciding with investments in children’s material culture through the novelization, dramatization and animation of comics.
Researcher with at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience with expertise in the field of Francophone comics studies but who maintains a broad range of interests that match the requirements of the project described above (novelization, adaptation, the book industry, children’s literature). Native or bilingual fluency in French is a must as is working knowledge of English. Knowledge of additional languages is an advantage. Expertise in comics studies from both linguistic and literary perspectives. Thorough knowledge of the French and Belgian comics from the 19th century until today as well as hands-on knowledge of the book publishing and sales industry in France and Belgium are indispensable.
