The School of Management is now inviting applications for two positions:

  • Assistant Professor in Management (Business Studies) for a fixed term of 3 years.
  • Assistant Professor / University Teacher in Management (temporary replacement, Strategic Business Development) for a fixed term of 1-2 years.

The start date is at 1.11.2019 but can be negotiated. The employment is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.

Your role:

The positions are located within the School of Management. The teaching duties of the Assistant Professor (Business Studies) position (3 years) are connected to the School’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in management (business studies) and will be decided based on the fit between the teaching needs of the School and the successful applicant’s areas of expertise. The teaching duties of the Assistant Professor / University Teacher (Strategic Business Development) position (1-2 years) is connected to the Bachelor’s Programme in Management and the International Master’s Degree Programme in Strategic Business Development.

As Assistant Professor your tasks include independent academic research, teaching duties as well as administrative tasks. You may supervise thesis at bachelor’s and master’s level. As a part of the research group (Strategic Business Development or Human Resource Management), you will also participate in the acquisition of external funding as well as take part in national and international collaboration.

The position of University Teacher is teaching oriented and your tasks are mainly focused on teaching and supervision in the Bachelor's Programme in Management and the Master's Programme in Strategic Business Development. As a member of either the research group in Strategic Business Development or Human Resource Management, you'll do research in your own field. Administrative tasks are also included.

The annual working time for both Assistant Professor and University Teacher is 1624 hours. The tasks are agreed in more detail in the Annual Work Plan.

Inspirational work environment:

The research within the subject of management is conducted within two research groups: Human Resource Management (HRM), and Strategic Business Development. The HRM group is Finland’s largest scientific research collective dedicated to examining people management issues in organizations. Its main three focus areas of research are international HRM, strategic HRM, and leadership. Research within the Strategic Business Development group focuses on inter-organizational networks and relationships, strategies and strategy processes, and the industrial service business.

In terms of education, the subject of management is taught via Bachelor’s degree programme in Management and Organisation as well as four Master’s degree programmes: Human Resource Management, Strategic Business Development (EPAS accredited), Managing Growth Firms (Seinäjoki) and Business Development (Kokkola). In addition, in cooperation with the School of Marketing and Communication, the offering also includes a Bachelor’s programme in International Business, and an international Master’s degree programme in International Business (EPAS accredited).

Your experience:

As Assistant Professor, you are required to hold a doctoral degree in Economics and Business Administration or other relevant field. You should also have the ability to conduct independent scientific work and deliver high-quality teaching. A proven track record in international scientific publishing is especially valued. Researcher mobility and active participation in international scientific research networks are also looked upon favorably.

As University Teacher, you are required to hold a relevant Master's degree and teaching experience in an institute of higher education. You should also have comprehensive and profound knowledge within your field of teaching and the ability to provide teaching of high quality. Also pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material and the ability to employ new teaching methods and new teaching technology, as well as research merits are looked upon favourably.

The administrative language of the University of Vaasa is Finnish. The teaching languages are Finnish and English. If the candidate is not a Finnish citizen or a Finnish citizen who is not a native speaker, or has not been educated in Finnish, they may be granted an exemption from the language proficiency requirement without separate application. The candidate is, however, expected to acquire the necessary Finnish language skills in accordance with the language policy of the University of Vaasa. The employer supports language studies. Strong English language skills are a prerequisite to succeed in the position.

Salary:

The salary is based on the University Salary System for Teaching and Research Staff. The salary for an Assistant Professor is based on demand levels 5-6 (2936–3423 €/month) and for an University Teacher on demand levels 4-5 (2535-2936 €/month). An additional personal salary component is paid based on work performance.
