Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for full-time fixed term position as Early Stage Researcher/PhD student (ESR-13) with Contipro, the biotechnology company in the Czech Republic.

The PMSMatTrain project is funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme under the Marie SkłodowskaCurie Initial Training Network for Early Stage Researchers (ESR) (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2018, Grant Agreement No. 813263). The ESR-13 position will be available from May 2020 on a temporary basis for a maximum period of 3 years (renewable 1 year full-time employment contract upon positive evaluation).

PMSMatTrain is a four-year project, under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Initial Training Network (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2018), Grant Agreement No. 813263. The project focuses on gaining a comprehensive understanding of the progressive phase of multiple sclerosis (PMS) from basics to translation, fully supported by eight beneficiaries (six research institutions and two SMEs). This multidisciplinary network will educate and train 15 Early Stage Researchers in device design, biomaterials, materials science, stem cell biology, in vitro, ex vivo and pre-clinical models of multiple sclerosis, molecular biology, in silicomodelling of CSF flow, material functionalisation strategies and device validation.

Programme fellows will experience both public and private sector research & development training and will be best placed to secure employment as high calibre, innovative and well-trained graduates.

Organisation:

Contipro is biotechnology company with a 30-year tradition. Contipro is one of the main world producers of hyaluronic acid. Its activities focus on the production of active substances for applications in cosmetics, pharmacy and medicine. Contipro has earned a reputation as one of the most advanced center in the field of hyaluronan-related chemistry and biology. The company has published 119 scientific publications in last 10 years and has submitted 92 patent applications. Most of Contipro’s R&D activities are conducted in its own laboratories. The R&D department is divided into 9 research groups comprised of cell physiology, tissue engineering, carriers of drugs, nanoparticles, nanofibers and microfibers, medicinal applications and pilot plant section. There is also a specialised group focussed on medical devices development. Contipro is involved in national and European projects and has many research cooperation with other research centres, universities and companies.

The research project will be led by Dr. Martin Pravda, Head of Department of Tissue Engineering (TI). The laboratory of Tissue Engineering is interested in the preparation of advanced materials for medical applications in field of regenerative medicine. The main goal of the TI group is to develop the most effective method for preparation of hyaluronan based scaffolds which meet certain criteria, such as acceptable toxicological safety, required physico-chemical characteristics, biocompatibility and biodegradability. The Laboratory also supports work dealing with the preparation and molecular/functional characterisation of novel hyaluronan-based scaffolds. Dr. Pravda has extensive experience with synthesis and chemical modification of HA derivatives and design of hyaluronan based hydrogels for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. He is involved in process of medical devices development and transfer of technology to production.

Job Description:

The researchers will develop and validate the therapeutic efficacy of a novel device housing a multi-modal hydrogel using in vitro and ex vivo models of multiple sclerosis (MS). Outputs from the research will inform in vivo studies and imaging modalities and will aid the generation of in silico models of the circulation of therapeutics within the cerebrospinal fluid.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will participate in:

  • Scale up of Multi-modal Hyaluronan Scaffold
    • Objectives:
      • Optimise protocols for generation of hollow hyaluronan spheres and multi-modal scaffolds at the laboratory scale, in collaboration with ESR 1, ESR 2, ESR 3 and ESR 4 (all NUIG).
      • Develop protocols for scale up of the hollow hyaluronan sphere reservoir system.
      • Conduct biodegradation studies on the multi-component hydrogel scaffold.

The successful candidate will do the following:

  • Develop a multi-modal functionalised hydrogel to modulate inflammation, re-myelination and neuroprotection
  • In collaboration with other consortium researchers, investigate the efficacy of this platform in different in vivo models of multiple sclerosis
  • Identify candidate biomarkers of re-myelination and repair
  • Develop protocols for the scale up of the optimised device in collaboration with research fellows in the private sector
  • Participate in training events for researchers and Principal Investigators involved in the programme
  • Liaise and report to the Project Manager, which includes contributing to periodic scientific reports
  • Contribute to the reporting of project milestones and deliverables in accordance with EU deadlines
  • Promote and disseminate results from the programme, which includes contributing to newsletters and participating in outreach events

Salary: The remuneration will be in line with the European Commission rules for Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant holders (Early-Stage Researchers, Initial Training Network).
