The aim of the post-doc is to investigate the effect of adding bio-liquids to the performance of hydrocracking of vacuum gasoil. The catalyst activity and stability will be investigated as well as the quality of the produced fuels.

Biofuels can provide 28% of total transport fuel by 2050, achieving reductions of more than 2 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions per year when produced sustainably. The increasing demand for biofuels implies the need for transformation of diverse bio-resources into liquid fuels, which poses challenges in process development to improve conversion efficiency, while decreasing the production cost.
To meet the timescale and quantity needed while keeping cost effectiveness, biomass implementation should be done through integration into existing refineries and infrastructure rather than requiring investment in new large bio-refinery units and infrastructures to support them.
The complexity of conversion of biomass compared to fossil oils requires a primary conversion – liquefaction – step to allow easier and cheaper processing for transport, as well as for introducing these for upgrading in such existing refineries. The most promising options today are fast pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction; both facing a common challenge for implementation at industrial scale.
The next step to compatible liquid fuels for transportation can be accomplished in existing refineries. Co-processing of fast pyrolysis liquids in FCC units is currently at the pilot-plant level. A less studied possibility is co-processing bio-liquids in a hydrocracker. Due to the high pressures of hydrogen, hydrocracking can take heavier feds can FCC and is less prone to coke formation.

IRCELYON (Institut de Recherches sur La Catalyse et l'Environnement de Lyon) is the actual CNRS laboratory that participates to 4Refinery. IRCELYON brings together all competences in heterogeneous catalysis over the Lyon area. It includes a permanent research staff of 95 members from CNRS and University and as many PhD students, post-docs, and invited scientists from all over the world.
IRCELYON includes 5 research groups supported by a platform of state-of-the-art equipment and helped by an efficient technical and administrative logistics. The research activities, at the very heart of sustainable development, are essentially devoted to energy, environment and green chemistry.

Eligibility criteria

The candidate should have a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering or catalysis with a good level in English (oral, written).
This Post-doc is funded by a European Project. This will involve periodic meetings with the project partners in Europe. The selected candidate is expected to be able to carry out his/her research work and to fulfil the related project obligations.
