A call is open for 3 (three) research interns at the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-ITI) of the University of Madeira (Funchal, Portugal), under the Regional Project M1420-01-0145-FEDER-000002, co-financed by “Madeira 14-20” – MITIExcell, under the following conditions:

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This research grant targets highly motivated students interested in gaining research experience.

 

Work Plan:

 

BIC1: Perceptions of sustainable development

In this project, the selected researcher will design and develop a survey to conduct pairwise comparisons of topics related to sustainable development. For example, appliance electricity consumption, carbon intensity of daily activities.

 

The main responsibilities of the researcher will be:

  • Conduct an analysis of the functional and non-functional requirements;
  • Design the database to support the survey development;
  • Develop the system in Python using the Django web framework.

 

BIC2: Semi-automatic Collaborative Labelling of machine time series datasets

In this BIC, the selected researcher will work on the Semi-automatic Collaborative Labelling project (SoCoL). SoCoL is a web-platform aimed at crowdsourcing the task of labeling time series machine-learning datasets, that was developed using Python and the Django web framework.

 

The main responsibilities of the researcher will be:

  • Assist in the design and deployment a user study;
  • Analyse and evaluate the results of the user study;
  • Write a comprehensive report of the user study and the main findings.

BIC3: Privacy in Smart-metering

In this BIC, the selected researcher will conduct a literature review on the topic of data privacy in the context of smart-metering applications.

 

The main responsibilities of the researcher will be:

  • Conduct a search of the related bibliography;
  • Read and organize the related bibliography in sub-topics;
  • Write a report with the main findings of the literature review.

 

Workplace:

The work will be conducted at ITI/LARSYS (Funchal, Portugal), under the supervision of Prof. Lucas Pereira.

 

Legislation and regulations:

The scholarships are directed to applicants under the current conditions established on the FCT regulations (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/) and Research Grant Holder Statute.

 

 

Scholarship length:

The scholarship will have a length of 3 months, with an expected start of September 15th, 2019.

 

Monthly stipend:

The student will receive a stipend of 388,81€/month as determined by the FCT regulations (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Accidents insurance is included.

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

Candidates should have the following requirements, skills, and competencies:

 

  • Be a student in one of the following areas: computer science, informatics engineering, or mathematics [BIC1-2-3]
  • Very good spoken and written English skills [BIC1-2-3]
  • Good programming skills (e.g., Java, Python, Matlab) [BIC1-2]
  • Experience with web development (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap) [BIC1-2]
  • Good knowledge of privacy and data protection methods [BIC3]
