The Italian National Institute of Health (in Italian: Istituto Superiore di Sanità - ISS) is accepting applications for a full-time Research Assistant (Early Stage Researcher) Ph.D. joint position, in collaboration with the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) - Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation (IRIB), and the University of Messina (UNIME), Italy for a period of maximum three years.

We are seeking a talented early stage researcher wishing to pursue a Ph.D. in “Bioengineering applied to medical sciences” of UNIME. The position is part of SAPIENS, a pan-European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (EU Horizon 2020 Programme), which aims to investigate how the dynamics of early social exchanges support the development of the social brain. SAPIENS combines advances in ecological, mobile real-time brain and behaviour measurement, data modeling and artificial intelligence to study early social development and to train a new generation of researchers in these ground-breaking approaches. For more information about the project and the position see: www.sapiens-itn.eu.

The candidate employed for this position will grant an Early Stage Researcher position at ISS in collaboration with CNR-IRIB and he/she will pursue a Ph.D. in the area of bioengineering applied to medical sciences at the University of Messina. Specifically, he/she will conduct research to set up a novel tool/software for studying motor, vocal and social developmental trajectories in infants at risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Main aim of the project will be to identify early markers of ASD.

The Early Stage Researcher/PhD student will be supervised by Dr. Maria Luisa Scattoni of ISS, Dr. Giovanni Pioggia of CNR-IRIB and Prof. Maria Fazio of UNIME and he/she will benefit of excellent research facilities, as well as outstanding Ph.D. supervision and technical support. The joint Ph.D. student will be based at the ISS headquarter in Rome but several stages will be planned at CNR-IRIB in Messina for research purposes and at UNIME for the PhD program research purposes.
