PhD Student (m/f/d)

A member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,200 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health, and matter.

The Institute of Fluid Dynamics is conducting basic and applied research in the fields of thermo-fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics in order to improve the sustainability, the energy efficiency and the safety of industrial processes.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Magnetohydrodynamics, invites applications as PhD Student (m/f/d) in the field of development of inductive measurement techniques for liquid metal.

The position will be available from 1st November 2019. The employment contract is limited to three years.

Tasks:

# focal point is the development of the contactless inductive flow tomography (CIFT) which allows to reconstruct the three dimensional flow structure in liquid metals
# investigation of new regularisation techniques for the linear inverse problem of CIFT, as well as development of tailored excitation sequences and sensor arrangements for specific applications
# experimental investigation of the liquid metal flow in model experiments for continuous casting of steel and Rayleigh-Bénard convection using CIFT
# development of new innovative inductive sensors for bubble detection and free surface reconstruction

Requirements:

# very good university degree (Diploma/Master) in natural sciences, electrical or mechanical engineering
# profound knowledge in measurement techniques for magnetic fields
# ideally also knowledge in fluid dynamics and flow measurement techniques
# profound knowledge in C++ and python
# experience in mathematical modelling and in conducting experiments
