Within the Department of Biological Sciences, Institute for Molecular Biosciences at Goethe University Frankfurt, the lab of mRNA-based gene regulation of Dr. Andreas Schlundt is seeking

a PhD student (E13 TV-G-U, 65%-part time)

with an initial contract duration until September 30 2021, starting as soon as possible.

We are investigating the role of mRNA regulatory elements for the recognition by RNA-binding proteins, as a key step for mRNA decay or stabilization. We are focusing on the role of key interactions and the stability of RNA elements by using atom-resolved complex structures as the basis for functional follow-up experiments. We thereby contribute to a broad understanding of different layers in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression.

Within the DFG-funded project “Cis- and trans acting determinants of mRNA structure, stability and fate” you will be responsible for the production and structural/biochemical/biophysical analysis of gene-regulatory RNA-protein complexes using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, crystallography, small angle scattering, Cryo-electron microscopy and a broad spectrum of biophysical methods like ITC, SPR and CD spectrometry. Your results will be exploited in permanent mutual exchange with close-by groups for the functional interpretation in cell-biological experiments and thus provide important details for an extended picture of mRNA-protein regulatory landscapes on the molecular level.

The Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main is one of the largest universities in Germany with around 48.000 students and with about 5.000 employees. Founded in 1914 by Frankfurt citizens and since 2008 once again proud of its foundation status, Goethe University possesses a high degree of autonomy, modernity and professional diversity. As a comprehensive university, Goethe University offers a total of 16 departments and a hundred degree programs along with an outstanding research reputation. Goethe University is committed to increase the proportion of women, and suitably qualified women are encouraged to apply. Candidates with disabilities will be given preference in the case of equal qualifications and capacity to complete the project. Durations of employment are subject to the ‘Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract’ in conjunction with the ‘Hessian Higher Education Act’.
