The professor position foresees an initial 4 years and 8 months full-time appointment and the recruitment of the ERA Chair team to develop outstanding research, advanced teaching and science management in the field of comparative medicine.


Professor has both academic and administrative duties concurrently.

  • leading R&D activity of the ERA-chair of  Comparative Medicine (COMBIVET), incl. particular disciplines such as: demonstrates excellent knowledge of and expertise in areas combining human and veterinary medicine in order to support EMÜ´s priority areas while bringing to the table his/her own specific strengths and research interests that help boost the distinctiveness of research done in EMÜ;
  • has a proven record of effective leadership that enables him/her to create and supervise a well-functioning and goal-oriented team of 12 experts, including experts of clinical medicine, biomedicine, veterinary science, biology and the environment;
  • general responsibility for the strategic development and operational management of the ERA Chair;
  • responsibility for establishing and supervising his/her own research team (including experts of clinical medicine, biomedicine, veterinary science, biology and the environment);
  • building the research excellence and institutional capacity of the ERA Chair and EMÜ in COMBIVET’s research field;
  • ensuring internationalrecognition and visibility for the ERA Chair and EMÜ in general;
  • supporting the process of turning research results into socially and economically relevant solutions and popularising comparative medicine/ One Health on a wider scale.




  • guaranteed salary 5500 EUR per month, (the amounts shall be supplemented by healthcare and social services required by law);
  • salary fund to recruit new ERA Chair team members;
  • funds for supporting the training and mobility of the team members and for undertaking dissemination and promotion activities;
  • access to research facilities;
  • institutional support to engage additional funds for new experimental equipment and consumables for research (covered by complementary sources of financing, e.g. EMÜ budget, EU structural funds and various national R&D funds - equal competition rules apply here similarly to all other Chair holders/ eligible parties interested in using these funds);
  • support for making arrangements and settling in in the City of Tartu;
  • possibility to shape the strategic development of the University in general via membership relevant strategic decision making bodies.

Eligibility criteria

To participate in the competition, candidates are required to submit the following documents to the Academic Secretary (Fr. R. Kreutzwaldi 1, 51006 TARTU, ESTONIA)

  • an application to the Rector in free format;
  • a copy of the document certifying PhD degree or equivalent;
  • CV (Curriculum Vitae) incl.
    • list of scientific publications of the last 10 years, indexed in Web of Science or Scopus;
    • up to 10 significant publications from the earlier period may be included at will;
    • information on academic work done within five recent years;
    • candidates should consider adding the names of two individuals who can be called upon to provide information regarding the candidate’s work;
  • motivation letter reflecting the candidate’s vision about the development of this specific research field and related international cooperation in the university, and the measures that the candidate is going to take for increasing the level of research in the field (max 1500 words);
  • other relevant materials at the discretion of the applicant.

For the evaluation of applicants for the position of professor, the director of an institute or college/head on the centre shall appoint an expert committee consisting of at least three members, one of whom must be external to the University, preferably from a country other than Estonia.

The academic committee of the Council of the University shall evaluate the applicants for the position of a professor, rank

the candidates in the order of preference and present a written evaluation to the council of the institute.

Professors shall be elected by the Council of the University.

The successful candidate has to fulfil the criteria of the level R4 of the European Framework for Researcher Careers profiles.

  • the person has to demonstrate an outstanding and strongly advancing research and academic manager career in the last 5 years and hold a h-index of no less than 15 (h-index count based on Google Scholar);
  • is an internationally renowned senior level researcher with extensive experience in the field of One Health with a focus on comparative medicine, especially cancer and cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders as well as joint and skeletal diseases in humans and animals;
  • has sound experience as a research manager and supervisor of other researchers, including experience in managing multidisciplinary research teams;
  • he/she is expected to have an excellent track-record of obtaining competitive research funding and to have a strong vision for the further development of the ERA Chair, ensuring its considerable visibility and impact;
  • the successful candidate will commit him/herself to a full-time position at the ERA Chair for the entire duration of the grant period (1.01.2020 – 31.08.2024);
  • has the ability to provide academic leadership; ability to collaborate effectively as a leader and also as part of a team, excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • teaching experience at the university, incl. supervising MSc & PhD students.
