OFFER DESCRIPTION

The research topic, relating a key aspect of Chinese language for its manifold implications (cultural, symbolic, literary, artistic and religious), focuses on a few applicable aspects of its (so-called) “homophony” or “sound harmony”. In the first phase, the objective is to investigate the lexemes used in Chinese to refer to the phenomenon and to describe formal, functional, pragmatical and rhetorical aspects. Analogies and differences with similar phonetic phenomena in western languages will be explored: assonance and paronomasia, calembour, pun.In the second phase, the research aims at outlining few rhetorical uses of xiéyīn in specific contexts. Specific characters combinations will be researched within homogeneous corpora, e.g. blogs on social and political issues, official political documents and speeches, as well as ritual languages and small talks.
