OFFER DESCRIPTION

Context. The scope of proposed PhD project is to harness the potential of complex quantum materials for quantum technologies. It will principally focus on unconventional superconducting Fe-based materials for which many fundamental questions remain to be answered. What is the origin of the electronic nematic state in these materials, in particular in FeSe, which does not have long-range magnetic order? How do the nematic fluctuations interplay with superconductivity: do they enhance Cooper pairing? What stabilizes the newly discovered double-Q phases in hole doped materials?

PhD candidate will be trained in the area of quantum materials, unconventional superconductivity, thermodynamics, material synthesis, and in particular develop advanced skills to work at cryogenic temperatures, under high magnetic fields and/or high pressures. New experimental probes will be developed to investigate thermodynamic properties of quantum materials under large uniaxial stress.

Eligibility criteria and requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a master degree in experimental solid-state physics. The candidate for this PhD project must have strong background in low-temperature experimental techniques, a solid background in basic solid-state theory, as well as a high proficiency in the English language.

 

QUSTEC programme follows MSCA eligibility criteria:

    Level of experience is ‘Early Stage Researcher’, according to the definition in the work programme of the 2018-2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions: Applicants must be, at the date of the respective call deadline of QUSTEC, in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree.

    Mobility criterion: The applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the future host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline of QUSTEC. Short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. For refugees under the Geneva Convention, the refugee procedure (i.e. before refugee status is conferred) will not be counted as period of residence/activity in the country of the host organisation.
