OFFER DESCRIPTION
The University of Cantabria-Instituto Internacional de Investigaciones Prehistóricas de Cantabria invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in studies about human-environment relationship during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition in northern Iberia, with a combination of well-established multidisciplinary disciplines including archaeozoology, taphonomy, stable isotopes and modelling under the supervision of Dr. Ana B. Marín-Arroyo.
About SUBSILIENCE PROJECT

The PhD scholarship is advertised within an ERC-Consolidator Grant (ref. 818299) funded by the ERC Executive Agency (ERCEA) on “Subsistence and human resilience to sudden climatic events in Europe during MIS3” undertaken by the supervisor. The main objective of this project is to evaluate the subsistence and human resilience of Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans to MIS3 climatic events, in different archaeological sites located in the southern European Peninsulas, dating from Mousterian to Gravettian periods. The PhD project will involve the analysis of the unpublished faunal assemblages from several sites in the Cantabrian region and its comparison with other contemporaneous European sites. The PhD scholarship will be financed annually for three years, up to a maximum of 4 years and, your key tasks as a PhD student are:
- To manage and carry through research project
- Attend PhD courses
- Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
- Teach and disseminate your research
- To conduct secondments at the partner institutes
- Work for the department

The PhD scholar will be included in a research group with senior and postdoctorals researches and other PhD students already working on various specific projects within the studies on human evolution and economic and ecological adaptations during Prehistory.
We offer a full-time PhD position for a period of 3 years. The fellow will receive a gross salary of 1,324.42 EUR/month researcher Type 6 - July 2019-level. S/he will receive all regular provisions for PhD fellows at UC, allocated office space, a PC or laptop and additional funding for research activities like attending conferences abroad and secondments at other institutions. The successful candidate may be asked to provide (limited) assistance with teaching.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants are expected to have the following qualifications and attitudes:
- An Master Degree in Archaeology, History or related disciplines, with demonstrable interest for and/or experience in zooarcheological and paleolithic studies.
- Collaborative attitude; enthusiasm, ability to work independently and ability to contribute creatively to the project.
- Skilled in academic writing, oral communication of research results, present research in international conferences and intermediate publications, strong analytical skills.
The candidate must have Spanish nationality or from any other member state of the European Union or from a state for which, under the international treaties established by E. U. and ratified by Spain, free movement of workers is permitted. Applicants with different nationality to that mentioned above may also apply if they can prove to be in the possession of a work permit and residence in Spain. The candidate must have a Master in a research field related to this particular announcement. The qualifications issued outside Spain that are intended to be used in this procedure must be in accordance with the current regulations.

Skills/Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a Master degree in Archaeology, Prehistory or any related topic with this position and have proven prior experience in archaeozoological analysis on Palaeolithic assemblages.

Specific Requirements
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the current PhD programme and the University’s rules on achieving the degree at the University of Cantabria. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the researcher’s contracts at the university.
