We welcome you to apply for a permanent position as Associate Professor in Social Anthropology at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Bergen.
The Department of Social Anthropology is one of Europe’s largest in the discipline, currently with 16 professors and associate professors, two post-doctoral fellows and some 20 PhD candidates. Long-term research and fieldwork is carried out in most parts of the world, and several major research projects are based at the department. Further details can be found on the Department’s web pages, http://www.uib.no/antro/en. The department offers degree studies at the levels of Bachelor, Master and PhD.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the long term development of the research and teaching community at the Department, and participate in teaching, supervision and examination work at all levels and across most regular anthropological topics, as well as conducting administrative tasks and taking part in committee work.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- PhD in Social Anthropology.
- Outstanding research qualifications within Social Anthropology, particular emphasis will be placed on research in the last five years.
- Passion for teaching and the ability to inspire students.
- Documented pedagogical skills.
- Good communication skills, also to a wider public audience.
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to contribute to a high standard of collegiality in the Department
The following additional qualifications will all be given weight in the assessment:
- Regional-ethnographic competence that will expand or broaden the Department’s existing regional-ethnographic competence.
- Documented experience in acquisition of external funding.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in a Scandinavian language, in order to be able to participate actively in all the functions the position entails, including administrative tasks.
The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant will be required to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years of being appointed.

- Salary at pay grade 68 - 75 (code 1011) in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 615 900 – 704 900 before taxes. Further increase in salary will depend on seniority. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.
