The PMSMatTrain project is funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme under the Marie SkłodowskaCurie Initial Training Network for Early Stage Researchers (ESR) (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2018, Grant Agreement No. 813263). The ESR-10 position will be available from on January 2020 on a temporary basis for a maximum period of 3 years (renewable 1 year full-time employment contract upon positive evaluation).

The PMSMatTrain project focuses on gaining a comprehensive understanding of the progressive phase of multiple sclerosis (MS) from basics to translation, fully supported by eight beneficiaries (six research institutions and two SMEs). This multidisciplinary network will educate and train 15 Early Stage Researchers in device design, biomaterials, materials science, stem cell biology, in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models of multiple sclerosis, molecular biology, in silico modelling of CSF flow, material functionalisation strategies and device validation.

Programme fellows will experience both public and private sector research & development training and will be best placed to secure employment as high calibre, innovative and well-trained graduates.

Core activities of the Bio-Imaging Lab:

The core R&D activity of the Experimental Cell Transplantation Group is to investigate whether and how immunomodulating cell or gene therapeutic approaches, as well therapeutic compound delivery, can influence both microglia and macrophage immune responses during neuro-inflammatory events in the central nervous system. These topics are experimentally investigated in vivo using animal models for multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and stroke, as well as in vitro using iPSC-derived microglia and macrophage cultures. Experimental techniques applied include: embryonic/adult stem cell culture and genetic engineering, stem cell transplantation in rodent models of neuroinflammation, fluorescent animal models, flow cytometric monitoring of immune responses, in vivo bio-imaging and quantitative histological analyses.

Job description

You will develop and validate cellular and molecular tools that enable to follow up inflammation, demyelination and remyelination in animal models for MS. These tools will be applied to test the therapeutic efficacy of a novel device housing a multi-modal hydrogel, to modulate inflammation, re-myelination and neuroprotection. The project a wide range of techniques including the use of reporter-gene animal models, flow cytometry, histology, molecular biology and advanced stem cell culture models. At the University of Antwerp you will highly interact with ESR-9 who will be responsible for developing and applying neuro-MRI tools to follow up inflammation, demyelination and remyelination in animal models for MS, as well as upon therapeutic intervention. Internationally, you will directly interact with two or more ESRs from different participating organisations during one or more secondments abroad.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare a Doctoral thesis in the field of Medical Sciences.
  • In collaboration with other consortium researchers, optimize the hydrogel holding device and investigate its efficacy in different in vivo models of multiple sclerosis on the molecular and cellular level.
  • Identify molecular and cellular candidate biomarkers of re-myelination and repair.
  • Develop protocols for the scale up of the optimised device in collaboration with research fellows in the private sector.
  • Participate in training events for researchers and Principal Investigators involved in the programme.
  • Liaise and report to the Project Manager, which includes contributing to periodic scientific reports.
  • Contribute to the reporting of project milestones and deliverables in accordance with EU deadlines.
  • Promote and disseminate results from the programme, which includes contributing to newsletters and participating in outreach events.

Qualifications: Essential

  • Master degree in Biomedical sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Bio-Engineering, Biochemistry, Physics, or related fields, obtained with outstanding or excellent study results.
  • Less than 4 years' full time-equivalent research experience and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree (PhD).
  • Resided less than 12 months in Belgium in the last 3 years.
  • Excellent communication and organisation skills.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Availability to travel nationally and internationally two to three times a year.

Qualifications: Desirable

  • Experience with outreach events.
  • A keen interest in pursuing translational research in multiple sclerosis.
