Job description:

The Institute for Energy and Climate Research, Troposphere (IEK-8), investigates the chemical and physical processes in the troposphere that impact the chemical composition of the atmosphere. We are seeking for a new Ph.D. student to work within a three-year program of the Graduate School HITEC (https://www.hitec-graduate-school.de/index.php?index=9). The offered PhD position will be part of the European H2020 Research and Innovation Action “Constrained aerosol forcing for improved climate projections” (FORCeS). FORCeS brings together 20 leading European research teams in order to jointly identify, constrain and efficiently parameterize the most critical processes determining aerosol radiative forcing and aerosol- and cloud-related climate feedbacks.

Your Job:

The secondary atmospheric aerosol is particularly challenging due to its complex chemical transformation in the atmosphere. Besides low to extremely low volatility organic compounds, secondary aerosols involve mineral acids and ammonia. Organic compounds constitute about half of fine atmospheric aerosols. With this PhD work you will investigate how the recently discovered group of highly oxygenated organic molecules contribute to the atmospheric secondary aerosol formation, considering current and future climate conditions. Your tasks in detail:

  • Perform studies in our new continuous STirred Atmospheric flow Reactor (SAPHIR-STAR)
  • Investigate the atmospheric oxidation process of organic compounds, integrating:

a) characterization of highly oxygenated organic molecules in the gas-phase. b) determination of their vapour pressures and partitioning into the particulate phase c) formation of secondary aerosol in interaction highly oxygenated organic molecule of with ammonia, sulfuric, and nitric acid.

  • Apply state of the art chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) within your studies

Your Profile:

  • Master degree in physics, chemistry, environmental sciences or a related field
  • Knowledge about mass spectrometry and physical or analytical chemistry is advantageous
  • High level of teamwork for the planning and execution of experiments as the interpretation of the complex chemical processes is only possible by involving other accompanying measurements.
