Type: PhD candidate in Chemistry

Duration: 4 years (after positive evaluation after 1 year)

Job description

The “graphene rush” has triggered a great interest in the design and fabrication of synthetic 2D materials (S2DMs) excelling in their chemical and physical properties for future emerging technologies. The European research project “ULTIMATE” will provide to 15 talented young researchers a well-structured training in the burgeoning field of synthetic organic 2D materials, including self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs).

Your role at the KU Leuven research group (www.defeytergroup.org) will be to prepare such organic S2DMs on surfaces, to functionalize them, and to characterize them with state-of-the-art spectroscopy and microscopy tools, including scanning probe microscopy. In particular, you will acquire skills and conduct research in 1) the solution based formation of S2DMs via non-covalent (self-assembly) as well as covalent chemistries on surfaces; 2) Morphological characterization of such S2DM nanosheets interacting via (non-)covalent interactions using scanning probe microscopies (scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy) and surface sensitive spectroscopic tools.

Profile of the candidate

  • Highly motivated to conduct research in the area of physical chemistry / organic chemistry / surface chemistry / scanning probe microscopy
  • Holder of an MSc degree in chemistry. Exceptional candidates from other science/engineering backgrounds will also be considered.
  • Have a strong background in physical chemistry / physical organic chemistry
  • Experience with scanning probe microscopy and surface chemistry is a plus.
  • Having an excellent academic track record.
  • Having an excellent command of English, both written and orally
  • Possess good academic writing and presentation skills.
  • Candidates can be of any nationality, but they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. They must also be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree

How to apply

  • Motivation letter - Full resume (CV)
  • Transcripts (overview of study results)

The documents should be merged into a single PDF file and sent to steven.defeyter@kuleuven.be (subject line: PhD Ultimate2).

Recruitment Process and Interview

  • Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview.
