OFFER DESCRIPTION
We offer employment in the project “Proteolysis-targeting strategies in bacterial systems for functional studies of proteins and improvement of antibiotics” funded by the FIRST TEAM program from the Foundation for Polish Science.
The Structural Biology Group led by Maria Górna specializes in structure-function studies of proteins and is interested in developing their applications in biotechnology and medicine. We are a young group affiliated with the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Warsaw and located at the Biological and Chemical Research Centre. See https://gorna.uw.edu.pl
Project description:
We will establish whether an induced-proteolysis approach would be effective to down-regulate target endogenous proteins in bacteria, and engineer the chemical tools (proteolysis-targeting chimeras, or PROTACs) needed to do so. We will screen for suitable bacterial proteases and ligands, and identified compounds will be validated in vitro and in bacteria. The resulting tools will enable regulation of gene expression on the protein level for studies of protein function and drug action. Bacterial PROTACs could pave the way to create novel antibiotics, which is crucial in the era of increasing antimicrobial resistance. Our collaborators include Ben Luisi (University of Cambridge) and WPD Pharmaceuticals.
