LUTH is a laboratory of Paris Observatory, devoted to the study of theoretical astrophysics, with an emphasize on numerical computations. The candidate will be a member of the team relativity and compact objects, which as six permanent members, all CNRS researchers. The candidate will be member of the doctorate school 564 "Physique en Ile de France"

Time-evolutions in general relativity and alternative theories.

When gravity is intense, it must be described by Einstein's theory of general relativity. The equations are highly non linear and, most of the time, cannot be solved analytically. Various numerical methods are available to study those equations. Spectral methods are particularly appealing because they enable to reach high accuracy with moderate numerical resources (compared to finite different schemes for instance).

The numerical library Kadath, developed at Paris Observatory, is a tool that enables the use of spectral methods in the context of general relativity and theoretical physics. It has been used successfully to study many problems, like binary systems of black holes or the structure of space-times with a negative cosmological constant. However it is currently limited to situations with a symmetry in time (stationarity, periodicity...)

These thesis aims at removing this limitation by studying the various numerical techniques that would allow for computing arbitrary time evolutions. As a first step, one will implement known techniques that have already demonstrated their ability to deal with such cases. One will then turn to the exploration of alternative techniques like spectral methods in time or constrained evolution schemes.

Alternative theories of gravity will also be considered.
