Offer Description

Aramaic, a Semitic language widespread in the Ancient and Late Antique Near East, deeply influenced languages in contact with it – particularly as far as script is concerned. The research fellow will therefore carry out a comprehensive study of the Aramaic influence – mostly concerning writing systems – throughout a long time span and a large area. The interference to be investigated initially appears in Old Persian and in the neighbouring languages, later affects heterographies in Greek, Denotic and Neo-Babylonian, finally involves Middle Iranian – Pahlavi heterograms are the the best-known example.
