Industrial design belongs to the Department of Business Administration, Technology and Social Sciences, ETS. The department has leading activities in economics, work sciences, innovation, natural resources, environmental and energy sciences. The department has approximately 200 employees and conducts research within 12 research topics distributed among three divisions, where the subject Industrial design is part of the Division of Humans and Technology. At the department, technical and social science courses are conducted within a large number of educational programs.

The subject Industrial Design is responsible for education at undergraduate and advanced levels, and focuses on developing future products, communications, services, environments and systems based on people's physiological, social and cultural conditions. We see design as a transforming activity and discipline, which creates sustainable, ethical and inclusive experiences, artefacts and services, based upon deep insights into challenges, situations and users. Through a curious, creative and critical approach, we create the necessary conditions to meet the needs of industry, society and academia. We are now recruiting several positions in the subject of Industrial design with the aim of strengthening and further developing our activities and environment in order to meet new requirements in research, innovation, teaching and collaboration.

Subject description
Industrial design includes theories and methods for designing products, services, communication and environments based on people's physiological, social and cultural conditions.

Project description
In the subject Industrial Design, research is conducted within place innovation and service design for attractive, inclusive and sustainable communities. Practical development processes in urban and rural areas, such as the renewal of city centres to meet the needs of residents and visitors despite increased e-commerce and external trading areas, are studied in collaboration between academia, business and society. Other topics treat the establishment of new visitor destinations, where the specific location, nature, culture and history of the site are utilized in innovative ways. In particular, innovative synergies between the various components, processes and stakeholders of the site are studied.

This PhD project aims to explore how place innovation and service design can be used as a method for creating an attractive, inclusive and sustainable society. Specifically, the project aims to increase knowledge about how sites, services, environments, situations and relationships can be designed with regard to challenges, needs and limitations in society, where the potential that exists in and between urban and rural areas is utilized. As a doctoral student, you will be part of a team of design and innovation researchers with solid experience of - and a passion for - practical and user-centered processes within place innovation and service design. The research is done in close relation to teaching and society.

The doctoral student position involves both theoretical and practical work, with the aim of completing a PhD degree. You are trained in scientific work in the form of studies and publishing of scientific articles in journals and presentations at national and international conferences, and through innovation and design work that is communicated in various forms and media, such as exhibitions, prototypes, performances, films etc.

The work is done both independently and under supervision. It is therefore important that you are self-motivated, able to constructively drive your work forward, and have the ability to develop scientifically and personally based on feedback. As a postgraduate student, you will take compulsory and optional doctoral courses that will contribute to your doctoral studies. Continuous collaboration with society and business is part of the work. Hence, this position includes multiple tasks, such as:

  • Participation in doctoral courses
  • Writing of dissertation scripts, research articles and conference contributions
  • Oral presentations at national and international seminars and conferences
  • Data collection and dissemination in ongoing projects and processes
  • Dialogue with actors from academia, business and society
  • Possible departmental service such as teaching, supervision, or other assignments

This position requires previous work experience and studies of innovation, design, site development or other relevant areas. The applicant must be motivated for postgraduate studies, be proficient in oral and written communication in both Swedish and English and have good collaboration and communication abilities. The skill to assimilate the doctoral education will be an important criterion for the appointment.

Employment as a PhD student is limited to four years. Salaries are paid according to a set payment scale. Teaching and other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20%, may be additional to this time. The place of employment is Luleå.
