Your Job:

Mathematical models and numerical optimization are essential tools for optimal design and operation of future integrated energy systems. To deal with the intermittent and stochastic nature of renewable energy sources and the uncertainties in projected energy demand, price data etc., we employ stochastic programming (SP), i.e., an optimization formulation taking into account a multitude of different scenarios. The scope of this PhD project is to develop a computational framework for systematic construction of such scenarios by combining machine learning, statistical inference and optimization techniques.Your tasks in detail:

Use machine learning, statistical inference and times series analysis to build models from extensive collections of historical time series data Develop methods for scenario generation, scenario tree reduction, and/or adaptive sampling and implement these into our in-house framework for optimization-based design and operation of energy systems Apply the new methods to challenging design and operation problems

Your Profile:

Excellent degree (Master, Diploma) in computational engineering, energy/process systems engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or a relevant discipline Expert knowledge of at least one programming language (preferably Python and C++) Expertise in numerical optimization and machine learning Excellent skills in spoken and written English: TOEFL or equivalent evidence of English-speaking skills Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently Excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team A high level of scholarship as indicated, for example, by bachelor and master study transcripts and two reference letters
